A window winder for moving a movable pane of a window assembly between a closed and open position by rotation of a handle 92 wherein the window winder comprises an integral locking mechanism which is moved from the engaged/disengaged position though movement of the handle, preferably axial movement. The locking mechanism is preferably disengaged when the handle is pulled outwards, and comprises a toothed gear 96 which engages with a locking bar 101. A key may be used to fixing the locking mechanism in the locked or unlocked position. The handle may be biased, e.g. via a spring 115 into the raised position and may move within a housing 91 which is cup shaped. The window winder preferably moves a horizontally mounted window in a hospital, prison or other secure facility. The fixing means (e.g. key lock) may be used to prevent people outside the room pushing the slidable frame. The shape and design of the handle prevents the winder being used as a ligature point.
