A method for forming a polyethylene and alumina nanocomposite coating on a substrate is described. The method may use microparticles of UHMWPE with nanoparticles of alumina to form a powder mixture, which is then applied to a heated steel substrate to form the nanocomposite coating. The nanocomposite coating may have a Vickers hardness of 10.5-12.5 HV. 1. A method for forming a nanocomposite coating on a substrate , comprising:mixing polyethylene microparticles with alumina nanoparticles in an organic solvent to form a precursor mixture;heating the precursor mixture at a temperature in a range of 75-95° C. for 18-30 h to produce a nanocomposite powder;applying the nanocomposite powder to the substrate heated at a temperature in a range of 160-200° C. to form the nanocomposite coating,wherein the nanocomposite coating comprises alumina nanoparticles dispersed within a polymeric matrix.2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising sonicating the alumina nanoparticles in the organic solvent prior to the heating.3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the polyethylene microparticles have a mean diameter in a range of 20-120 μm.4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the polyethylene microparticles consist essentially of UHMWPE.5. The coating can be achieved by an electrostatic spray coating, preferably using ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) as a matrix for the coating. For example, up to 2.95 wt. % carbon nanotubes can be used as reinforcement, as can up to 4.95 wt. % hydroxyapatite. A dispersion of CNTs and HA in the coating is substantially uniform. The tribological performance of such coatings include high hardness, improved scratch resistance, excellent wear resistance, and corrosion resistance compared to pure UHMWPE coatings.
