An exemplary embodiment can be an apparatus for real-time, in situ measurement of gas compositions and heating values. The apparatus includes a near infrared sensor for measuring concentrations of hydrocarbons and carbon dioxide, a mid infrared sensor for measuring concentrations of carbon monoxide and a semiconductor based sensor for measuring concentrations of hydrogen gas. A data processor having a computer program for reducing the effects of cross-sensitivities of the sensors to components other than target components of the sensors is also included. Also provided are corresponding or associated methods for real-time, in situ determination of a composition and heating value of a fuel gas. 1. An apparatus for real-time , in situ measurement of gas compositions and heating values comprising:a near infrared sensor for measuring concentrations of hydrocarbons and carbon dioxide;a mid infrared sensor for measuring concentrations of carbon monoxide;a semiconductor based sensor for measuring concentrations of hydrogen gas; anda data processor having a computer program for reducing the effects of cross-sensitivities of said sensors to components other than target components of said sensors.2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said near infrared sensor comprises a first light source claim 1 , a first flow cell claim 1 , and a spectrometer.3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein said mid infrared sensor comprises a second light source and a second flow cell claim 2 , with said second flow cell positioned in a line with said first flow cell.4. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein said semiconductor based sensor is mounted in line with said first flow cell.5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said near infrared sensor measures light intensity in a wavelength range of 900 to 1700 nm.6.
