The waveguide transmits light from a light source to the light extraction component by total internal reflection (TIR). The light extraction component includes one or more reversibly moveable surfaces for altering illuminance distribution patterns of the luminaire in response to one or more forces applied to the light extraction component by a force application assembly of the luminaire. 1. A luminaire comprising:a light source;a waveguide including a waveguide body and a light extraction component on one or more surfaces of the waveguide body, the waveguide body transmitting light from the light source to the light extraction component by total internal reflection (TIR), wherein the light extraction component includes one or more reversibly moveable surfaces for altering illuminance distribution patterns of the luminaire in response to one or more forces applied to the light extraction component by a force application assembly of the luminaire.2. A software installation and recovery system provides an initial bootstrap sequence of instructions that initializes the low-level parameters of the client device, initializes the persistent storage system, loads a bootstrap loader from the persistent store into program memory, and passes execution to the bootstrap loader. A second stage boot loader locates the operating system in the persistent store, loads the operating system into program memory, and passes execution to the operating system which then performs necessary hardware and software initialization, loads the viewing object database code and other application software from the persistent store, and begins execution of the applications. The persistent store contains at least two partitions for each of the following: the second stage boot loader; the operating system kernel; and the application software. A partition table resides in the boot sector that records an indication for duplicated partitions in which one of the partitions is marked primary and another is marked backup. The invention verifies that each level of software was loaded off of the primary partition. If a load was from the primary partition and the installation at that level was successful, then a successful indication is recorded for that level, otherwise, the backup partition for that level is copied over the primary partition and a failure indication is recorded for that level. Finalizing the installation for the top application level of software may be delayed until all parts of the application environment have been successfully loaded and started.

Titanium tetrachloride production

The invention provides a process for the production of titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) by the chlorination of titanium values in a titanium--containing starting material. The process includes exposing the starting material to a chlorinating agent and contacting the starting material with an inert liquid while the starting material is exposed to the chlorinating agent. The inert liquid is at a temperature of 200 - 350°C and is at a pressure of 5 - 100 atmospheres (1 atmosphere = 101.325kN/m2). This causes the starting material to react with the chlorinating agent to form TiCl4. The invention also extends to TiCl4 whenever made in accordance with the method.

A latch mechanism ( 1200 ) comprises a resilient wire ( 404 ) supported proximate its first end ( 412 ) and second end ( 414 ) by a support structure ( 406 ). The latch mechanism ( 1200 ) also includes one or more hook shaped catches ( 218 ) that have cammed outer surfaces ( 302 ) and wire engaging openings ( 304 ). To engage the latch mechanism ( 1200 ) the resilient wire ( 404 ) is urged against the cammed outer surfaces ( 302 ) bending the resilient wire ( 404 ) and allowing the resilient wire to rebound into the wire engaging openings ( 304 ). To disengage the latch mechanism the resilient wire ( 404 ) is deflected, e.g., by pushing a moveable manual actuator ( 408 ) that is engaged with the wire, in order to release the resilient wire ( 404 ) from the wire engaging openings ( 304 ) of the catches ( 218 ).

The invention provides a process and installation for the treatment of a solid. The process includes passing the solid along a kiln having a hollow interior, while supporting the solid on supports moved successively along the kiln and heating the solid, by radiant heat, to a temperature at which it undergoes an endothermic chemical reaction. The installation includes a kiln having a hollow interior with an inlet end and an outlet end, a roof, a floor and a pair of opposed side walls, and a path for supports loaded with the solid to pass successively along in the interior, from the inlet end to the outlet end, the path extending along the floor. The installation includes heating surfaces for radiating heat towards the solid on supports passing along the path, and a plurality of supports, movable in succession along the path.

A food supplement, either in the form of a snack bar or a beverage, which contains one or more cartilage enhancing supplements is provided. The cartilage supplements include chondroitin, glucosamine, and hyaluronic acid. The food supplement may additionally be fortified with cetyl myristoleate. The beverage is a mixture of a juice drink base which may include a water-based fruit flavored juice prepared using a pasteurization process at a relatively high temperature and a cartilage supplement solution which includes a cartilage supplement prepared at a relatively low temperature. The beverage may be carbonated, non-carbonated or concentrated. The preferred cartilage supplement is glucosamine, preferably associated with a counter ion, more preferably as glucosamine HCl. The supplement also contains vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and calcium hydroxide powder.
