Structures for a tool surface of a downhole tool are constructed from a metal clay molded in a wet state. The wet state clay is a workable combination that can have a braze alloy grain, a tungsten carbide grain, and a binder. Additional cutting inserts can be embedded in the molded clay. Heat treatment applied to the molded metal clay causing the binder to be combusted and consumed. The braze alloy melts and then cools into a fused state with the tungsten carbide grain therein. The structure can affix to the tool surface of the tool by first being fused and then attached by brazing to the tool. Alternatively, the structure can be positioned in a fusible state adjacent the tool surface. When the heat treatment is applied, the structure fuses together and forms a metallurgical bond with the tool surface of the tool. 1. Method, apparatus and article of manufacture for monitoring and characterizing the operation of a transducer (i.e., motor or pump) downhole. In particular, transducer RPMs are determined by analysis of acoustic information. An acoustical source (signal generator) located on a downhole tool (e.g., a drill string) creates acoustic energy which is received and processed by a receiving unit, which may be located at the surface of a wellbore. The acoustical source is operably connected to the transducer, so that the frequency of the signal produced by the acoustical source corresponds to the speed of the transducer. The acoustic signal of the acoustical source may then be isolated from other acoustical energy produce by downhole equipment, such as a drill bit. Having determined transducer speed by isolation of the acoustic signal, other operating parameters may be determined. illustrative operating parameters include torque, flow, pressure, horsepower, and weight-on-bit.

A form of an interior surface of the deflector and/or an exterior surface of the flow control device can diffuse the flow of the fluid.

A sleeve can be used as a stop collar on tubing. A fusible element disposed about the inside or outside surface of the collar can be accessed by electrodes via the at least one access point in the collar. An insulator insulates the fusible element from the collar, while the electrodes apply electric current to the fusible element. A fusible material of the fusible element is heated to melting in response to the applied electric current and affixes the collar to the tubing with a metallurgical bond formed from the melting and re-solidifying of the fusible material inside a space between the first circumferential surface of the collar and the opposing circumferential surface of the tubing. The fusible material can be heated to melting directly with the electric current, or an ignitable material activated with the electric current can melt the fusible material.

A first aspect relates to a method of separating a downhole tubular comprising running a tool (100, Fig 1) into a wellbore to a predetermined location on a work string. The work string is rotated to operate a cutter assembly disposed on the work string below the slips. This separates an upper portion of the tubular from a lower portion. The upper portion of tubing and the tool are pulled from the wellbore. A second aspect relates to a method of separating a downhole tubular that incorporates the features of the first aspect, in addition to applying a second higher upward force on the work string to unlock and set a packer 300; flowing fluid through the work string and into an annular area between tubular and a borehole; and reducing the second upward force on the work string to unset and re-lock the packer. The annular area is accessible through a cut formed between the upper and lower portions by the cutter assembly.

A first aspect relates to a method of separating a downhole tubular comprising running a tool (100, Fig 1) into a wellbore to a predetermined location on a work string. Flow actuated slips 220 are actuated and the slips are maintained in the set position by providing a first upward force on the work string. The work string is rotated to operate a cutter assembly disposed on the work string below the slips. This separates an upper portion of the tubular from a lower portion. The upper portion of tubing and the tool are pulled from the wellbore. Preferably a second higher upward force is applied to unlock and set a packer and fluid flows into an annular area between the tubular and work string. A second aspect relates to a downhole apparatus comprising a set of flow actuated slips that are actuated and maintained in a set position by a first upward force; a tool and a locking system (400, Fig 2) to prevent premature actuation of the tool. The locking system comprises: a first portion with a collet sleeve (410, Fig 4C) and a plurality of displaceable finger members (415, Fig 4C), a second portion including a collet housing (420, Fig 4C) and wherein the locking system is unlocked by an additional upward force applied to the tool.

A bottom hole assembly can include a mill and a whipstock having an upper end and an opening. A retractable pin extends from the mill into the opening. A section of the whipstock is separable from the whipstock in response to a force applied to the mill. The section is positioned between the opening and the upper end. A method can include positioning a bottom hole assembly in a well, the bottom hole assembly including a whipstock releasably secured to a mill, and then releasing the mill from the whipstock by separating a section of the whipstock from a remainder of the whipstock. Another method can include conveying a bottom hole assembly into a well, setting an anchor, then applying pressure to a hydraulic release mechanism, and then applying a force to the mill, thereby separating a section of the whipstock from a remainder of the whipstock.
