A method of retrofitting an existing airfield runway sign with a single LED lamp. Light is produced by a linear array of white-light LEDs. A cylindrical lens is mounted longitudinally adjacent to the LEDs, and collects a central portion of the light emitted from the LEDs. A pair of inclined surfaces extend from the lateral edges of the LEDs to respective lateral edges of the cylindrical lens. The inclined surfaces have a rough surface texture and reflect light diffusely. A magnetic field controller has been developed, which allows magnetic deflection of the arc of an alternating current high intensity discharge (HID) lamp. The controller consists of a driving circuit and an electromagnet. The system delivers a fast switching magnetic field, which can follow the alternating current signal of an alternating current HID ballast. The method minimizes the electromagnet's inductance and uses fast reacting ferromagnetic materials (Ni-Zn ferrite). To achieve the required magnetic field, a current amplifier was developed to pick up the signal from the alternating current ballast and drive the electromagnet with up to two amperes. The alternating magnetically deflected HID lamp system allows the use of magnetic deflection for alternating current HID lamps. A vehicle headlamp system can achieve multiple beam functions (day light running, low beam and high beam) of a headlight system with only one alternating current lamp.

A lamp assembly comprising: a side-emitting LED light source, a planar substrate having a first side and a second side, said LED light source being mounted in a center region of said first side, leaving an edge region of the first side extending circumferentially around said LED light source; said substrate having a portion of high thermal conductivity in thermal contact with said LED light source; a reflector having a reflective surface defining a concave cavity with an opening in a direction toward a field to be illuminated and having a through passage extending into said cavity; said LED light source being extended through said passage and having light emitting surfaces facing said reflective surface, said edge region being circumferentially sealed to said reflector, and electrical connections extending through said planar substrate connecting said LED light source to a supply of electrical power.

A method of retrofitting an existing airfield runway sign with a single LED lamp. Light is produced by a linear array of white-light LEDs. A cylindrical lens is mounted longitudinally adjacent to the LEDs, and collects a central portion of the light emitted from the LEDs. A pair of inclined surfaces extend from the lateral edges of the LEDs to respective lateral edges of the cylindrical lens. The inclined surfaces have a rough surface texture and reflect light diffusely. The inclined surfaces collect a peripheral portion of the light emitted from the LEDs, and direct the reflected light toward the cylindrical lens. The LEDs, cylindrical lens and inclined surfaces are all mechanically supported by a heat sink. The replacement lamp is placed into a runway sign near its top or bottom edge, and illuminates both viewing surfaces of the runway sign simultaneously without a diffuser.

Suitable electrical connections, not shown, can be supplied from the circuitry (26) to the LED light source (22) via insulated wires running up the side of the post (16) or threaded through longitudinal apertures formed in the post (16). The LED light source can include a cap having a secondary reflector thereon or the light source (22) can be covered by a dome-shaped, transparent element having sidewalls and a closed top having at least one metallized surface and including an optic.

The connecting part may be a sleeve that slides onto the circuit board. A hand grip/heat sink may be provided at the second end of the circuit board.

A coupling assembly for mechanically and optically coupling an LED to a fiber optic. The assembly has a light guide with an axis and has a first end including an input window to receive light from the LED. The input window is formed to interface with the LED. A second end includes an output window. A light transmissive body extends axially from the input window to the output window, and a housing has a support coupling to the light guide. A first wall extends from the support to a coupling face adjacent the input window, the coupling face being formed to interface with the support for the LED. A second wall extends from the support adjacent the output window and defines an output recess with the output window defining an internal end wall of the output recess. The recess is formed to receive an end of the fiber optic.

A vehicle light ( 1, 11 ) produces low-beam output using generally spherical distribution light source ( 7 ) with increased efficiency. The vehicle light ( 1 ) includes transmissive lens ( 2 ) through which light exits vehicle light ( 1 ); concave reflector ( 3 ); light occluding member ( 100 ) defining first sub-reflector ( 6 ); cut-off edge ( 4 ); and second sub-reflector ( 5 ). Concave reflector ( 3 ) extends upward above light occluding member ( 100 ) and directs low-beam light toward transmissive lens ( 2 ). Light occluding member ( 100 ) is disposed horizontally proximate a longitudinal axis of the vehicle light and low-beam light is reflected between concave reflector ( 3 ) and light occluding member ( 100 ) toward transmissive lens ( 2 ). A second sub-reflector ( 5 ) disposed below generally spherical distribution light source ( 7 ) has a concave reflecting surface ( 18, 18 a , 18 b ), preferably shaped as a wedge of a sphere, to reflect low-beam light, emitted downwardly from generally spherical distribution light source ( 7 ), towards concave reflector ( 3 ).

Replaceable single LED lamp for runway sign

A replacement lamp for an airport runway sign. Light is produced by a linear array of white-light LEDs. A cylindrical lens is mounted longitudinally adjacent to the LEDs, and collects a central portion of the light emitted from the LEDs. A pair of inclined surfaces extend from the lateral edges of the LEDs to respective lateral edges of the cylindrical lens. The inclined surfaces have a rough surface texture and reflect light diffusely. The inclined surfaces collect a peripheral portion of the light emitted from the LEDs, and direct the reflected light toward the cylindrical lens. The LEDs, cylindrical lens and inclined surfaces are all mechanically supported by a heat sink. The replacement lamp is placed into a runway sign near its top or bottom edge, and illuminates both viewing surfaces of the runway sign simultaneously without a diffuser.
