Paint vehicles.-Turpentine substitutes for use in paints, varnishes, &c. are made from ordinary petroleum oil. The petroleum is purified by treatment at about 60‹ F. with a saturated solution of salts of tartar or salts of lemon, and with a mineral acid such as hydrochloric acid or an ester such as ethyl chloride. The petroleum is separated, thinned with methylated spirit, and warmed to 100-160‹ F. Powdered naphthalene and a readily oxidizable essential oil, such as oil from eucalyptus amygdaline or pinus siberica, oil of cloves, amber, or juniper are added. The liquid may also be treated by further additions at about its boiling point of naphthalene and methylated spirit, and, after cooling, of white spirit (waterwhite kerosene) and benzoline which has been rendered non - inflammable by treatment with sodium chloride and hydrochloric acid.
