In this elongating operation, while the outer diameter of the softening portion of the glass preform is measured, the tensile stress is adjusted such that the outer diameter of the softening portion coincides with a preset value of the control outer diameter. In particular, this method is characterized in that the preset value of the control outer diameter is changed at least during a predetermined period until termination of elongation or during a predetermined period from the start of elongation.

The glass-forming raw material is vaporized by heating it at a temperature higher than its boiling point and it is directly supplied to the burner. The vaporized glass-forming raw material and a fuel gas for synthesizing glass soot are supplied to an inner port of the multi-port burner, and a fuel gas for heating the preform is supplied to an outer port of the multi-port burner. The molar ratio of water generated by reaction of the fuel gas for synthesizing glass soot to the glass-forming raw material is from 2 to 3.

The optical fiber has, from its center to the peripheral portion, a first core having a first refractive index n 1 , a second core having a second refractive index n 2 (< n 1 ), a first cladding having a third refractive index n 3 (< n 2 ), and a second cladding having a fourth refractive index n 4 (> n 3 , < n 2 ). The outer diameter of the second cladding is set to be 25 to 40 µm. Specifically, the refractive indices of the first and second claddings of the optical fiber preferably increase in the radial direction from the inner side thereof to the peripheral side thereof. This structure is obtained by adjusting the supply amount of a fluorine material in the manufacturing process of preform regions corresponding to first and second claddings such that the contents of fluorine decreases in the radial direction.

Abstract The invention provides a rod-in-tube method for producing a glass preform for use in the fabrication of an optical fiber. The present invention is directed to an apparatus for the production of a hermetically coated optical fiber in which a glass preform for an optical fiber is melt drawn in a melt drawing furnace to produce a bare optical fiber which is passed to a reactor where a feed gas is supplied. The bare optical fiber is coated with a thin carbon coating made from the feed gas using a chemical vapour deposition (CVD) method wherein the reactor comprises an upper portion to which the feed gas is supplied, a middle portion in which the CVD method is substantially carried out and a lower portion from which an exhaust gas is withdrawn, and a cross sectional area of the middle portion perpendicular to a longitudinal direction of the optical fiber is larger than that of the upper portion.

A method for producing a glass preform for an optical fiber comprising jetting SiCl 4 as a glass-forming raw material and an insert gas from a first nozzle of a multi-nozzle burner and, as another glass-forming raw material, at least one hydrogen-containing silicon compound with larger oxidation or hydrolysis reaction heat than that of SiCl 4 selected from the group consisting of SiHCl 3 , SiH 2 Cl 2 , SiH 3 Cl and SiH 4 from a second nozzle surrounding the first nozzle, flame hydrolyzing or oxidizing the glass-forming raw materials to synthesize glass soot particles, depositing the glass soot particles on a starting member to form a porous soot preform with a controlled bulk density distribution and heating and sintering the soot preform to obtain a transparent glass preform, by which a large glass preform is stably produced without cracking.

Abstract The present invention is directed to a method for producing a porous preform for use in the fabrication of an optical fiber. The method uses at least two burners for synthesizing glass soot particles at least one of which generates a double-layer flame having an inner flame and an outer flame and at least one of which is used for forming a core part of the preform. The method comprises the steps of supplying SiC14 and optionally GeCl4 to the inner flame of the double-layer flame, and SiCl4 to the outer flame of the double-layer flame to flame hydrolyze the supplied compounds to synthesize glass soot particles, supplying SiCl4 and GeCl4 as glass-forming raw materials to the burner for forming the core part to flame hydrolyze the supplied compound to synthesize glass soot particles and depositing the generated glass soot particles on the lower end of a rotating starting member and drawing the porous preform in the direction of the axis of the starting member to produce a porous preform comprising a core part containing at least partly GeO2. A porous preform produced by this method gives a transparent glass preform the surface of which is not cracked or peeling.
