Housings for security access control unit and access devices

A security access control device comprises a central control unit and a plurality of remote access devices in communication with the central control unit. The central control unit 3 has a simple hinge construction 11 to allow placement and removal of the lid portion 9 of the central control unit on the base portion 7. The hinge comprises a guide ramp 27 and a surrounding wall 29 to allow for predictable placement and removal of the lid portion onto the base portion. The access devices (not shown) comprise a mounting frame for securing to an electrical back box and are each provided with a plurality of spacer members (43, fig 18) connected to the mounting frame by way of a disposable snap joint. The spacer members are conveniently on hand for mounting and may be used individually or together to allow for different sized spacing to be achieved.

An RFID proximity tag reader 1 comprising a ruggedised housing 3 with a pair of hollow screw posts 17, 19 that extend through the entire housing from the front to the back to enable the proximity reader to be secured to a wall or other structure. A pair of screw caps cover the screw posts and are secured in the housing via engaging arms that engage with corresponding slots in the housing. The proximity reader has an electronics unit mounted in the housing and the back of the housing is sealed thereby sealing the entire electronics unit within the sealed housing. An external casing may also be provided to cover the proximity reader, the external casing has a pair of screw holes co-incident with the screw posts of the proximity reader. Also disclosed is a process of manufacturing a proximity reader.

A miniature, weather resistant proximity reader 1 containing a RFID proximity tag reader. The proximity reader has a housing 3 with a pair of screw posts 17, 19 that extend through the housing to enable the proximity reader to be secured to a wall or other structure. A pair of screw caps cover the screw posts and are secured in the housing via engaging arms that engage with corresponding slots in the housing. A front facing speaker is mounted in the casing and a plurality of speaker holes are formed in the housing adjacent and surrounding the screw post. These speaker holes are in turn covered by a screw cap. The thickness of the screw cap may be reduced adjacent to the speaker holes. An annular gasket 23 may surround the speaker holes. Also disclosed is a process of manufacturing a proximity reader.

An access control system

This invention relates to an access control system (1) comprising an access unit (3) associated with an access point and a control unit (5) connectable to the access unit (3) by way of a communications link. The access unit (3) has means to generate an access request and a transmitter to transmit the request to the control unit (5). The control unit has means to receive a request from the access unit, means to receive a response to the access request from an operator of the control unit (5) and means to transmit an access to signal to the access point. The access control system further comprises a separate computer network (9) comprising a server (7) and at least one computing device (6) operable as the control unit (5). The communications link (11) between the control unit and the access unit is routed through the separate computer network. The invention obviates the need for extensive wiring and additional expensive equipment while at the same time provides a flexible access control system. <Figure 1>
