In a gas or liquid chromatographic separation process distortion of the front of the forwarding phase is prevented by subjecting the forwarding phase to flow velocity profile straightening effects. This can be done (a) by exposing the retarding phase on the pore surfaces of a porous mass of statistically uniform pore size at least in a direction substantially at right angles to the flow path (b) by feeding the forwarding phase through the porous retarding phase under turbulant flow conditions or (c) by feeding the forwarding phase alternatingly through sections of the porous retarding phase and open connecting passages wherein a net transverse flow of the forwarding phase is brought about during flow through the said open connecting passages.
