A geographic area is segmented into zones with a subset of the transmission slots allocated to each of the zones. The invention includes a method and apparatus for adjusting the transmit power of a base station. In one embodiment, the transmit power of a base station is adjusted using rate metrics. A method according to one embodiment includes adjusting a transmit power of a target base station based on a per-user rate metric associated with the target base station and at least one per-user rate metric associated with at least one other base station. The per-user rate metrics may be based on any base station metrics, such as average system throughput of the base station, aggregate cell capacity of the base station, and the like. The per-user rate metrics may be computed or estimated using feedback information from wireless user devices. In one embodiment, the transmit power of a base station is adjusted using other information, such as geographic distances between base station, signal strength measurements received at base stations from other base stations, and the like, as well as various combinations thereof. A method according to one embodiment includes obtaining non-feedback information and adjusting the transmit power of the base station using the non-feedback information.

In a system in which the modulation scheme employed may change on a per-time-slot basis, a user's available data rate may change even if the user maintains the same number of time slots, because the capacity of the user's time slots may change. Therefore, a method is disclosed for determining the number of time slots to assign to a user as a function of the user's current data rate requirement and the actual current cumulative data rate of the time slots currently assigned to the user. The user data rate requirement may further be a function of a quality of service (QoS) contracted for by the user. Thus, the assignment of the time slots within the frame is made dynamically and the number of time slots employed by a user is increased or decreased according to the user's current data rate requirements and the ability of the time slots already assigned to the user to meet those requirements.

A first resistive heating element 130 is associated with the pump, and a plurality of second resistive heating elements 140 is attached to the inner surface of a side wall of the tank. The method comprises estimating the freezing conditions of the DEF in the tank using at least two sensors, a first sensor 110 close to the pump, and a second sensor 120 close to the inner surface of the side wall. If the first sensor detects frozen DEF, the first resistive heating element is operated. If the second sensor detects frozen DEF, the plurality of second resistive heating elements is operated. The DEF is typically urea which is decomposed to form ammonia for use in a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst.

In one embodiment, each of two antennas simultaneously transmit a time slot's worth of data while time division multiplexing a pilot signal with the data. The pilot signal from the first antenna is encoded with a first code such as a Walsh code and the pilot signal from the second antenna is encoded with a different code such as a different Walsh code. The different codes enable a receiver to distinguish the pilot signals when they are received to enable coherent detection of signals transmitted by both of the antennas.

In a TDMA system a multifunction control channel is employed that carries data used for implementing channel access functionality for users and is also employed at the remote terminals in the performance of modem functionality. In other words, information necessary to accurately receive data on the user traffic channels is obtainable by processing the multifunction control channel. This is achieved by arranging the broadband channel of the TDMA system as a repeating frame having time slots in which at least one time slot is reserved for use as the multifunction control channel, and the data that is transmitted on the multifunction control channel is encoded using a spread spectrum format. To this end the data carried on the multifunction control channel is encoded in a way that uses each symbol of the multifunction control channel as if it were a so-called spread spectrum "chip". At least one of the remaining time slots of the frame, and preferably all of the remaining time slots, which are typically used to carry user traffic arranged as logical channels, are not spread spectrum encoded. With regard to modem functionality, the remote terminals use the received multifunction control channel to a) perform frame synchronization, i.e., frame timing, b) perform frequency offset estimation, c) obtain an estimate of the channel impulse response, and d) estimate the received signal strength for use in gain control.

In typical operation, each of a plurality of high-speed data streams directed to respective data users is demultiplexed into multiple (G⊃1) lower rate substreams, which are modulated by a CDMA spreading code and transmitted from M antennas at a base station. A receiver employs P antennas and multi-user detection to demodulate the G data substreams of its associated user. Performance measures for a variety of illustrative transmission and receiver configurations are derived using novel techniques for calculating system level capacities and spectral efficiencies (measured in bits per second per Hertz per sector). System design and configuration tradeoffs are readily made based on such performance determinations.

In a wireless communication system, the constellation mapping scheme employed may be changed on a per-time-slot basis, i.e., from time slot to time slot, so that the constellation used to encode the symbols of each time slot may be different for each time slot within a single frame and may be different for a particular time slot in different consecutive frames. In other words, several constellation mapping schemes are available, with each providing the ability to transmit a different number of bits per symbol, and the particular constellation mapping scheme employed for any time slot need be selected for that time slot only. The ability to use any particular constellation mapping scheme is dependent on the current channel quality. The particular constellation mapping used for the user data of the time slot may be indicated in the preamble of the time slot. To this end, each time slot may have its own preamble that is mapped with a constellation mapping scheme which is a) known a priori, b) may be the same for all time slots, and c) may be different from the constellation mapping scheme used to encode user data in the time slot. A receiver can determine the constellation mapping used for each time slot from solely from the preamble of the time slot.

Systems, methods, and software for managing radio resources forvehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications. A geographic area is segmented into zones with a subset of the transmission slots allocated to each of the zones. The subset of the transmission slots allocated to each zone is partitioned into periodic transmission slots assignable to individual vehicles for periodic transmissions and special transmission slots reserved for special transmissions according to a contention-based protocol. A resource manager stores a mapping of transmission slots for each of the zones. When a vehicle enters one of the zones, the resource manager performs a slot assignment for the vehicle from the periodic transmission slots allocated to the zone, and transmits a notification to the vehicle indicating the slot assignment.

The anchor mobility mechanism may be configured to support migration of a flow of a wireless device between mobility anchors within a wireless communication system using functions performed by a control element (CE) and one or more forwarding elements (FEs) within the data plane of the flow of the wireless device. The functions may include identifying a time at which to initiate migration of the flow, initiating migration of the flow based on identification of the time at which to initiate migration of the flow, or the like, as well as various combinations thereof.
