A system and method for removing gas bubbles from blood during circulatory assist procedures. An active filter apparatus forces the bubbles to the center of the system where they are removed from the blood before the blood exits the filter. 1. A gas removal system for use in a cardiopulmonary bypass circuit for use with a patient , said system comprising:a pump for pumping blood from the patient through the bypass circuit; a shell defining a chamber characterized by a central axis, a top and bottom;', 'an impeller disposed within the chamber;', 'a motor operably connected to the impeller,', 'a gas vent in fluid communication with the central axis of the chamber and located proximate the top of the chamber,', 'a blood inlet port affixed to the chamber; and', 'a blood outlet port located at the radial periphery of said chamber;', 'wherein the impeller is configured to rotate a volume of blood within the chamber., 'an blood filter for removing gas bubbles from blood passing through the bypass circuit, said blood filter comprising2. The system of further comprising:a venous cannula in fluid communication with the pump, said venous cannula adapted for fluid connection to the venous system of a patient; andan arterial cannula in fluid communication with the blood outlet port, said arterial cannula adapted for fluid connection to the arterial system of the patient.3. The system of further wherein:the blood inlet port is located at a radial periphery of the chamber.4. The system of further wherein:the blood inlet port is located at a radial periphery of the chamber at a location lower than the blood outlet port.5.
