Ammonium chloride.-Hot coal-gas is treated with water sprays A located before the hydraulic main to assist in removing ammonium chloride.- The overflow I from the hydraulic main leads by a pipe J to a well K with a tar overflow L. A pump M returns the water from the well K to the spray A. The circulating ammonium chloride solution.is maintained at or near 70‹ C. until of sufficient strength to crystallize, when it is supplied by a pump O to cooling-tanks P.

Retort furnaces.-In a vertical retort setting the air for combustion before entering the regenerator passes through flues K from bottom to top and along the top of the setting. The invention is described in connexion with a setting of the kind comprising two or more sets of retort beds A arranged back to back and adapted for heating either separately or together by means of producer gas supplied from a main C. Valves D control the supply of gas through flues E to the retort beds, and the waste gases after passing through the regenerator B are led by way of flues E and dampers H to the chimney flue F.
