The element is housed in an oil fuel chamber 18 in a valve casing and the upper disc engages the head of a bolt 28 secured to a flexible diaphragm 16 co-operating with a circular seating 22. The element acts in opposition to a spring 32 urging the diaphragm against its seat, and an increase in the temperature of the oil fuel increases the closing pressure on the diaphragm. In a device for indicating or controlling temperature or both, an elastic body, with end flanges 24, Fig. 1, or one end flange 53, Fig. 5, extends the distance between opposite walls of its container but leaves a space containing a material 39 which on expansion with rise in temperature deforms the elastic body so that an actuating member 30 contained in a cavity therein is forced to move. In Fig. 1, the flanges 24 are clamped between end plates 10 and the ends of a cylinder 20 forming the container, the actuating member 30 being a pin extending through apertures in the end plates and having two lengths of different diameters joined by a frusto-conical section so that an axial component of force is transmitted to the pin.
