An improved radio modem is disclosed for use with an autonomous radio telemetry system. The radio modem includes a reprogrammable microprocessor, a radio transceiver, and a serial interface. By providing a software program within the radio modem that converts the serial interface into a general purpose interface to external input/output devices, and by providing additional programmed decision making capability into the radio modem, no external telemetry computer is required to interface with the input/output devices, and the radio modem operates as a combination telemetry computer and radio device. A system and method for implementing local base stations is provided. The system includes a plurality of mobile devices, a local area network (LAN), and a plurality of local base stations coupled to the LAN. Each local base station in the system has a unique address on the LAN, and is configured to transmit and receive data packets to and from the mobile devices. Using the unique address assigned to a particular local base station, the data packets may be transferred between local base stations over the LAN. Each local base station in the system may include a central processing unit (CPU) coupled to a sound card and a network interface card, and a transmitting and receiving means that sends and receives modulated RF signals to and from the mobile devices. The sound card is configured to demodulate an incoming RF signal to produce an incoming frame of data, and to generate an outgoing modulated RF signal from an outgoing frame of data. Each local base station may also include a software module executed by the CPU and configured to extract a packet of data from the incoming RF signal and encode the packet of data into an outgoing datagram that includes addressing information enabling the outgoing datagram to be directed to another local base station over the LAN, and also configured to extract a data packet from an incoming datagram received from the LAN and encode the data packet into the outgoing frame of data tha includes information enabling the outgoing frame of data to be transmitted to the mobile device.

Methods and apparatus for efficient communications in a wireless communication network are provided. The wireless communication network has a predetermined network paging pattern which includes a plurality of page transmission periods during which repeated attempts for initiating a communication with a mobile communication device are made until the communication is established, if at all. The mobile device attempts to decode information over a wireless communication channel during each one of the page transmission periods. If the information is unsuccessfully decoded during all of the page transmission periods, the mobile device causes a message which informs the network of the mobile device to be transmitted to the wireless network. On the other hand, if the information is successfully decoded during at least some, but not all, of the page transmission periods, the mobile device refrains from transmitting the message to the wireless network.

A mobile device experiences a condition where a time overlap exists between a packet data burst being communicated over a packet data channel of a serving cell and broadcast data burst being communicated over a broadcast control channel of a neighbor cell. The mobile device sets its RF receiver to receive the packet data burst instead of the broadcast data burst based on identifying that the neighbor cell is not a candidate for an upcoming handoff. On the other hand, the mobile device sets its RF receiver to receive the broadcast data burst instead of the packet data burst based on identifying that the neighbor cell is a candidate for an upcoming handoff. The mobile device may set the RF receiver to receive the packet data burst instead of the broadcast data burst based on further identifying that a call drop is imminent.

A system and method for implementing local base stations is provided. The system includes a plurality of mobile devices (20), a local area network (LAN) (14) , and a plurality of local base stations (44,46) coupled to the LAN. Each local base station in the system has a unique address on the LAN, and is configured to transmit and receive data packets to and from the mobile devices. Using the unique address assigned to a particular local base station, the data packets may be transferred between local base stations over the LAN. Each local base station in the system may include a central processing unit (CPU) coupled to a sound card and a network interface card, and a transmitting and receiving means that sends and receives modulated RF signals to and from the mobile devices. The sound card is configured to demodulate an incoming RF signal to produce an incoming frame of data, and to generate an outgoing modulated RF signal from an outgoing frame of data. Each local base station may also include a software module executed by the CPU and configured to extract a packet of data from the incoming RF signal and encode the packet of data into an outgoing datagram that includes addressing information enabling the outgoing datagram to be directed to another local base station over the LAN, and also configured to extract a data packet from an incoming datagram received from the LAN and encode the data packet into the outgoing frame of data tha includes information enabling the outgoing frame of data to be transmitted to the mobile device.
