Compositions of exogenous chemicals, particularly phloem-mobile exogenous chemicals, are provided for treatment of plants, wherein the composition comprises the exogenous chemical and an enhancing agent consisting of an anthraquinone or substituted anthraquinone. Specific compositions contain herbicides, particularly N-phosphonomethylglycine and herbicidal derivatives thereof, i.e., glyphosate. The compositions exhibit enhanced effectiveness compared to compositions in which the enhancing agent is not present. Also provided are processes for applying an exogenous chemical with an anthraquinone or substituted anthraquinone enhancing agent to achieve enhanced biological effectiveness.

Enhanced method of killing weeds with glyphosate herbicide

In the present invention, there is disclosed a method of enhancing the herbicidal activity of a glyphosate herbicide, comprising adding to the glyphosate herbicide a mixture of a first surfactant and a second surfactant at a weight ratio of total surfactant to glyphosate of about 1:30 to about 2:1, wherein the first surfactant has a chemical structure comprising a cationic or protonatable amino group and a linear or branched, saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbyl group containing 8 to 25 carbon atoms, and the second surfactant has the formula R-CO-NR'-(CR'i2)in-COOM, whereby the weight ratio of the first to the second surfactant being about 1:10 to about 10:1. Also described is an herbicidal composition prepared according to the above method and a method of killing or controlling weeds. The first and second surfactants exhibit a synergistic interaction in enhancing herbicidal activity of the glyphosate herbicide.
