Energy Optimized Cache Memory Architecture Exploiting Spatial Locality

Номер: US20140108731A1
Принадлежит: WISCONSIN ALUMNI RESEARCH FOUNDATION

Aspects of the present invention provide a “SuperTag” cache that manages cache at three granularities: (i) coarse grain, multi-block “super blocks,” (ii) single cache blocks and (iii) fine grain, fractional block “data segments.” Since contiguous blocks have the same tag address, by tracking multi-block super blocks, the SuperTag cache inherently increases per-block tag space, allowing higher compressibility without incurring high area overheads. To improve compression ratio, the SuperTag cache uses variable-packing compression allowing variable-size compressed blocks without requiring costly compactions. The SuperTag cache also stores data segments dynamically. In addition, the SuperTag cache is able to further improve the compression ratio by co-compressing contiguous blocks. As a result, the Super Tag cache improves energy and performance for memory intensive applications over conventional compressed caches. 1. A cache memory system comprising:a cache memory having a plurality of index addresses, wherein the cache memory stores a plurality of data segments at each index address;a tag memory array coupled to the cache memory and the plurality of index addresses, wherein the tag memory array stores a plurality of tag addresses at each index address with each tag address corresponding to a data block originating from a higher level of memory; anda back pointer array coupled to the cache memory, the tag memory array and the plurality of index addresses, wherein the back pointer array stores a plurality of back pointer entries at each index address with each back pointer entry corresponding to a data segment at an index address in the cache memory and each back pointer entry identifying a data block associated with a tag address in the tag memory array; whereindata blocks are compressed into one or more data segments.2. PROCESSOR AND METHODS FOR REMOTE SCOPED SYNCHRONIZATION

Номер: US20160139624A1
Принадлежит: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.

Described herein is an apparatus and method for remote scoped synchronization, which is a new semantic that allows a work-item to order memory accesses with a scope instance outside of its scope hierarchy. More precisely, remote synchronization expands visibility at a particular scope to all scope-instances encompassed by that scope. Remote scoped synchronization operation allows smaller scopes to be used more frequently and defers added cost to only when larger scoped synchronization is required. This enables programmers to optimize the scope that memory operations are performed at for important communication patterns like work stealing. Executing memory operations at the optimum scope reduces both execution time and energy. In particular, remote synchronization allows a work-item to communicate with a scope that it otherwise would not be able to access. Specifically, work-items can pull valid data from and push updates to scopes that do not (hierarchically) contain them. 1. A processing system , comprising:a first scope having a first scope instance; anda second scope having a second scope instance, wherein the first scope instance and the second scope instance are hierarchically unconnected at a respective scope level, andwherein a work-item in one of the first scope and the second scope is configured to remotely access and synchronize one of the second scope instance and the first scope instance associated with a remaining one of the first scope and the second scope.2. SYNCHRONIZATION MECHANISM FOR WORKGROUPS

Номер: US20200379820A1
Принадлежит: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.

A technique for synchronizing workgroups is provided. Multiple workgroups execute a wait instruction that specifies a condition variable and a condition. A workgroup scheduler stops execution of a workgroup that executes a wait instruction and an advanced controller begins monitoring the condition variable. In response to the advanced controller detecting that the condition is met, the workgroup scheduler determines whether there is a high contention scenario, which occurs when the wait instruction is part of a mutual exclusion synchronization primitive and is detected by determining that there is a low number of updates to the condition variable prior to detecting that the condition has been met. In a high contention scenario, the workgroup scheduler wakes up one workgroup and schedules another workgroup to be woken up at a time in the future. In a non-contention scenario, more than one workgroup can be woken up at the same time. 1. A method for scheduling workgroups for execution on an accelerated processing device (“APD”) , the method comprising:detecting execution of a wait instruction by a workgroup, the wait instruction specifying a condition variable and a condition to be met for the condition variable;monitoring the condition variable to detect the condition being met;in response to detecting that the condition is met, determining whether the wait instruction is part of a high contention scenario or is part of a non-contention scenario, based on a number of updates to the condition variable before the condition is met; andwaking up a number of workgroups in response to the condition being met, the number of workgroups being woken up being dependent on whether the wait instruction is part of a barrier or is part of a high contention scenario or is not part of a high contention scenario.2. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining whether the wait instruction is part of a high contention scenario or part of a non-contention scenario comprises:in response to ...

Power signals having controllable peak-to-peak amplitudes are provided to electrode sets so that during a first period of time, a first amplitude signal is provided to a first electrode set and a second amplitude signal is provided to a second electrode set. The first amplitude is greater than the second amplitude and bipolar current flows from the first electrode set to the second electrode set. During a second period of time, a third amplitude signal is provided to the first electrode set and a fourth amplitude signal is provided to the second electrode set. The third amplitude is less than the fourth amplitude and the current flows from the second electrode set to the first electrode set. Alternating first and second periods of time establish repetitive bipolar current flow between electrode sets. The addition of a backplate establishes unipolar current flow.

Принадлежит: Cardiac Pacemakers Inc

A first power output with a first frequency is provided to a first set of electrodes while a second power output with a second frequency, different then the first frequency, is provided to a second set of electrodes. Power outputs are provided to electrodes so adjacent electrodes receive power outputs with different frequencies, thereby establishing a voltage potential between adjacent electrodes and bipolar current flow. The frequencies of the power outputs are selected such that the resultant waveform indicative of the magnitude of the amplitude difference between the outputs has a period short enough to avoid stimulation of excitable muscular and cardiac tissue. Periodic frequency switching between the first and second power output provides uniform current flow between the electrodes over a given period of time. The addition of a backplate establishes unipolar current flow.
