[Class 130] A receptacle 1 for ash, cigarette ends, &c. has a rockable cover 5, the edges 9, 8 of the front and rear portions of which are adapted to coact with the inner face of the wall of the receptacle and the top edge of the receptacle respectively to form a seal around its entire periphery to prevent the egress of smoke or the ingress of air. The cover 5 is shovel-shaped and is provided forwardly of its centre with lugs 6 pivotally engaging recesses in the ends 2 of the receptacle. The edge 8 is flat and seats on the top edge of the back wall 4 and also on the top edges of the end walls 2 to the rear of the recesses. The cover has an extension 10 by which it may be tilted to shoot the ash into the receptacle and which forms a cigarette-rest.

The device comprises a Tee-shaped finger 7, and a small barrel 9 with a ratchet forming a lock, fixed in the cell 5, is provided internally with a series of helical ramps and pierced by an opening 26, 27 for the finger 7 to pass through. The introduction of the finger 7 into the small barrel 9 due to the pressure by the user rotatably drives the small barrel 9 which locks the box 1 into the retracted position, unlocking being initiated by renewed pressure on the box 1.

A dashboard mounted ashtray for a car has a front section swivelled on a container section about a horizontal axis. To empty the front tray the section is swivelled and the contents tipped into the airtight rear section. The fitting allows the driver to dispose of lighted cigarette ends without danger of fire and without having to loose driving attention by stubbing out the end. The airtight container snuffs out the ends and prevents fumes from entering the car. A simple catch empties the container.

An ashtray has a closed chamber 1 (Fig. 2) for the retention of smoldering cigarette stubs insertable into the chamber through an opening provided with pivoted traps 3 and 4, the traps being biased by gravity to fall into the open position shown in dot and dash lines unless held closed by the weight of a sliding sleeve having a flange 14 which bears on the traps 3 and 4. The sleeve comprises a body 8 having an upper part of enlarged diameter provided with projections 11 for engaging a lid sleeve 12 which is provided with the flange 14. Movement of the sleeve is restricted by a flange 9 which engages a ridge 7 formed on the inner chamber 1. In a second embodiment (Fig. 6) the traps are pivoted on rods located in vertical recesses in the chamber 1 and the outer parts of the traps are curved so as to be part circular.

This co-operates with the lid to form a spring detent mechanism which holds the lid in the open or in the closed position.

The tray is retained in the recess by a spring clip over the top edge whole the bottom of the recess is part of the dashboard moulding. The guide clips locate in holes in the sides of the housing.

The present invention relates to a stopper for an ashtray or similar receptacle comprising two shutters 5 in the form of sectors of spheres articulated about an axis 16 passing through the diameter of the primitive sphere of the shutters 5, and mounted in such a manner as to engage with their convex surface in a circular-section aperture of the lid. According to the invention, the control mechanism for the shutters comprises two connecting rods 12, each articulated at one of its ends at a lateral point 11 of one of the shutters 5 which is remote from the axis of articulation 10-16, the two said connecting rods 12 being situated symmetrically on either side of the diametral plane perpendicular to the plane of contact of the two shutters 5, the other ends of the said connecting rods being articulated at 23 on the two ends of a rocking lever 22 articulated about a pin 19 which is solidly fixed to the lower face of the lid and situated in the diametral plane separating the connecting rods 12, with a means 25-26 for causing the said rocking lever 22 to rotate about its axis 19.

The ash tray mounted in a vehicle, has an open mouthed receptacle (3) supported inside a frame (1) so that it can be tilted about a horizontal axis. The frame is fitted into a recess in the vehicle and when the receptacle is swung forwards, its open mouth faces the front opening. It can then be swung backwards with its mouth inside. Its position is controlled by a spring which contacts a fixed stop (36) and also by a braking device. Part (20) of the surface of the receptacle is curved and incorporates teeth which mesh with the teeth of a pinion (52) forming part of a gear train terminating in another pinion (54) carrying a bladed rotor (50) acting as a flywheel. This forms the braking device.
