The device can slide along the shaft (13) of an umbrella, the shaft having at its opposite ends two annular grooves (14, 15) corresponding to the opened and closed positions of the umbrella. Said device comprises two sleeves (11, 12) which slide with respect to each other. A first sleeve (11) has a small locking ball (16), partially and automatically housed in one of said grooves. Said first sleeve also has a recess (17) in which the small ball can be moved radially, whereas the second sleeve (12) has a recess (21) which is capable of housing, even partially, said small locking ball when the device is in an unstable position between the opening and the closing of the umbrella. The present invention is directed to improvements of a support assembly having a versatile structure capable of use with a variety of different products, devices, etc. intended for outdoor and/or indoor use such as, but not limited to, furniture, and/or umbrella or shade structures. The support assembly includes a body having a plurality of connector structures fixedly connected in outwardly extending, collectively surrounding relation thereto. The connector structures movably and removably interconnect one or more inserts in overlying relation to an outer surface of the body. When the body defines a support pole for an umbrella assembly, the plurality of connectors extend outwardly from the inserts in movable engagement with a canopy activating hub, thereby maintaining a spacing between the hub and the inserts, concurrent to travel of the hub along the length of the body.

An umbrella runner comprises a sleeve 1, a nest 2 (connected with the stretchers) and a base 3. The sleeve has upper groove 11 and lower groove 12 which engage respectively with the curved end 51 and holding end 52 of a detent spring 5 within the main umbrella tube. The base is engaged with the sleeve by way of rim (31, Fig 2) on the base with groove (14, Fig 2) on the sleeve. The free-arm shade has radial shade ribs (6), support ribs (7) attached to the latter, and a shade rod slide (8) that is freely attached to support ribs (7). An upper hub is fixed to a guide tube, which is telescopically disposed in and reciprocally movable relative to a uppermost end portion of the support tube. The guide tube and a slider, sleeve or runner are interconnected by flexible traction means in the form of a flexible traction member. One end of the flexible traction member is firmly secured to the slider, the other is firmly secured to a counterweight component. When closing the umbrella, the slider is moved downwards the support tube. By this, the slider pulls the flexible traction member, so that the counterweight component is lifted upwards. When the upper end of the counterweight component comes in touch with the lower end of the guide tube, the guide tube is pushed upwards by the counterweight component. By this, the upper hub is lifted. This simultaneously causes a lift of the ribs, pivotally connected to the upper hub. In a second embodiment, there is added a free pulley system in order to save some force. The umbrella includes a support post having a hole, and a top housing and an opposing bottom housing supported by the post. The bottom housing has a bottom hub, a top cap disposed about the bottom hub, and an opposing bottom cap disposed about the bottom hub opposite the top cap. The bottom cap has a lever lock receptacle. Spokes are pivotally disposed about the top housing, and a canopy is disposed about the spokes. Struts are pivotally disposed about the bottom housing.
