Each bearer 9 consists of two parallel stiff wires, one end of each ending in a safety pin type of spring 8, and transverse bracing wires 11 intersect the bearers at the base of the springs 13, the wire 11 and the bearers 9 having oppositely directed kinks 10, 12 which interlock at intersection points.

As shown, hooks 11 bent up from T- shaped blanks have the cross-pieces 10 received in a hem or pocket 9 extending around the border 7 above the welt 8. The hooks 11 pass out through slits in the bottom edge of the border and are hooked under the bottom coils 12 of the springs 1 or the metal frame supporting the springs. According to the Provisional Specification the hooks may be replaced by clips or by lugs secured to a wooden frame by screws. Specifications 404,441, 413,565, 519,297 and 633,497 are referred to.

A method of forming a pocketed spring unit (), comprising a plurality of pocketed spring portions () arranged in a row, is described. A method of forming a pocketed spring unit for an upholstered article comprises taking successive strings of pocketed springs and welding at least one sheet of material to at least a first end of the pocketed springs. Anvils are moved from a non-operative position to an operative position, in which they are located between adjacent pockets at upper and lower ends of the springs. This embodiment makes use of the surplus material that is formed at the ends of the pockets in the form of flaps or “ears” of material. These flaps protrude upwardly initially, and then become folded flat as the spring unit advances between the rolls of material. 1.
