Disclosed herein is a process for purifying aryl carboxylic acids, in particular terephthalic acid, wherein the impure acid is dissolved or dispersed in an ionic liquid and a non-solvent is added to precipitate the purified acid. The present disclosure further relates to compositions comprising terephthalic acid and one or more ionic liquids. 1138-. (canceled)139.
