An enhanced system for monitoring clogging of a fluid filter. A differential pressure sensor connects to fluid lines on opposite sides of the filter to measure a pressure difference across the filter. A viscosity-indicating property sensor connects to one of the fluid lines to measure a viscosity-indicating property of the fluid. A filter monitor in communication with the differential pressure sensor and the viscosity-indicating property sensor issues an operator alert when the pressure difference across the filter exceeds a differential pressure set point. The differential pressure set point is a function of the viscosity-indicating property of the fluid in the fluid line. In one embodiment, a fluid flow rate device in communication with the filter monitor indicates a flow rate of the fluid through the filter. The differential pressure set point is additionally a function of the flow rate of fluid through the filter.

A visual indicator device and method for determining the presence of oily contaminants in an aqueous stream are provided. The device includes a filtration status chamber for receiving and discharging the aqueous stream, and a transparent wall enabling viewing of the chamber interior. A push filter design activates a floating key lock upon insertion and extraction, where the filter key may be used simultaneously as a lock and as an identifier for particular filter attributes. The filter base may be situated inline, and in fluid communication, with influent and effluent piping, such as within a refrigerator. The filter housing assembly may be attached to, and removed from, the filter base by a push-actuated release. Upon insertion, the filter key shifts the filter lock longitudinally to receive interlocking segments. A water filter includes a filter unit having a body portion adapted to be rotatingly received into a filter head assembly. An engagement protrusion extends from the body portion and is adapted for reception in a complementary receiver in the filter head assembly. An electronic device is disposed on the filter unit having a memory storage unit. A laterally extending key member is disposed on the body portion between the first engagement surface and the second engagement surface. The laterally extending key member is adapted to reposition an interference member from an interference position, whereby the body portion can be fully inserted into the filter head assembly to a non-interference position, whereby the body portion can be fully inserted into the filter head assembly. 1. A fluid filter comprising:a body portion adapted to be received into a filter head assembly of an appliance, wherein receipt of the body portion in the filter head assembly triggers a reconfiguration of a filter system of the appliance;an engagement protrusion extending from the body portion and adapted for reception in a complementary receiver in the filter head assembly;an electronic device disposed on the filter having a memory storage unit, wherein the memory storage unit stores at least filter life data to define current filter life data; anda data relay disposed within the electronic device, wherein triggering of the reconfiguration of the filter system is defined by the data relay delivering the current filter life data to the appliance.2. The fluid filter of claim 1 , wherein delivery of the current filter life data is via a wired connection with the filter head assembly.3. The fluid filter of claim 1 , wherein the reconfiguration of the filter system is further defined by a control unit and a user interface of the appliance utilizing the current filter life data delivered from the data relay of the electronic device.4.
