SUBSTANCE: method for rolling hot-rolled band is realized in rolling line including at least two rolling stands with horizontally changed upper and lower rolling rolls operating as themselves (duo stand). Each roll may rest directly or through intermediate roll upon backup roll. Process may be realized in reversing rolling stand for rolling hot strip at least by two passes for changing its state. Method allows to achieve optimal plane-parallellism of hot and, preferably of cold band. At least in one band target out-of-plane-parallellism along width of band is set in one zone of band in order to determine practically achieved degree of out-of-plane-parallelism and to compare it with preset degree of that parameter. Then difference is calculated and by means of working setting organs, for example mechanical organs or other, said difference is minimized. Apparatus for performing the method includes at least two or several setting working organs, namely: rolling rolls that may be moved in axial direction; or units for bending rolling rolls; unit for crossing in pairs rolling rolls and backup rolls; units for zonal cooling of rolling rolls; screening covers in lengthwise zones of rolling rolls; units for heating edges of band in front of line for finish rolling, inside it or after such line, for example in zone of exit roller table; units for cooling edges of band in front of line for finish rolling, inside it or after such line; unit for lubricating edges of band inside finish rolling line. Solid lubricant, such as graphite, is contained in a box 4, which is surrounded by a brush 7 composed of a heatresistance substance such as plaited asbestos. A box extends axially along each roll 1, 2, and is mounted on trunnions in blocks 9 which slide in guides 10, and is pressed against the rolls by springs 14, adjusted by screws 12. Lubricant is supplied to the box through holes filled by plugs 6, or through a lid. A guard 16, supported by brackets 17, protects the top box from plates being returned over the top roll. According to the Provisional Specification, a wire brush may be employed.

Preferably, a relatively slow axial oscillation of the brush is simultaneously effected, by means of a planetary reduction gear 26, carried on a non- rotatable axially movable sleeve 23, keyed to the other stationary shaft 4. The rotation of the brush 2, on the bearings 24, is imparted to the input shaft 27 of gear 26, so that the output shaft 30 drives link 34 around its eccentric bearing 37. The varying inclination of the link produces oscillatory axial motion of the parts 30, 26, 27, 29, 23, 25 (1) and 2.

A wedge 2 in the form of a chamfered corner piece, comprising, on each of its faces 21, an abrasive surface 3, 3', supported by a layer of elastic material 4 which can be deformed, is inserted between two mill rolls 1, 1', slightly spaced and turning in opposite directions. By applying a force F on the wedge 2 in the direction opposite to the direction of rotation of the rolls 1, 1', the elastic material 4 is deformed and the abrasive/roll contact occurs over a surface and no longer along a generating line. The invention makes it possible to provide the polishing in situ of strip mill rolls without having to remove them.

Embodiments of the present invention relate to roll polishers that may be utilized with rollers in rolling stands that have restrictive space requirements. A system and method for improving properties of a metal strip during rolling between rotating upper and lower work rolls in a mill stand, for reducing work roll edge wear, for improving distribution of thermal expansion of the work roll during rolling, for reducing required rolling torque for achieving a particular strip thickness reduction, and for increasing the tonnage of rolled strip between roll changes, by continuously shifting the rotating work rolls during rolling to impart a spiral motion to the work rolls, and by online grinding, heat rehardening and cooling of the work rolls outside the mill stand.
