The tool assembly includes rods having cutting tips and positioned in rod guides which are slidably positioned in shafts provided in a tool holder. In an equilibrium state, the cutting tips do not extend from the tool holder. When a force is applied to the rod guides, the rod guides move in a first direction along the shafts in the tool holder, resulting in exposure of the cutting tips which enhance the tube surface. When the force is removed from the rod guides, the rod guides move along the shafts in a direction opposite the first direction to retract the cutting tips within the tool holder. A method for forming a lightweight axle shaft is provided. A first tubular blank is inserted in a die defining an extrusion throat at one end. A tool is inserted into the die having a mandrel with portions of increasing diameter. The tool is moved towards the outlet end of the die to partially extrude the blank through the extrusion throat and form a hollow axle shaft having a variable inner diameter based on the varying diameter of the mandrel. The tool is then removed and a second tubular blank is inserted and placed in engagement with the first blank. The tool, or a different tool, is inserted into the die and again moved towards the outlet end of the die to complete extrusion of the first blank and produce a shaft having diameters at each end that are less than the diameter of an intermediate portion of the shaft.

Micrometers may be deployed to monitor resultant wall thickness, and the variation in wall thickness is effected by progressively advancing the insert (6) as the tube (5) is drawn.

The manufacture of seamless tubes in which the process includes providing an assembly having a metal tube blank (1), and an elongate metal core (2) of shape memory effect material which is surrounded and contacted by the tube blank (1) with a minimal gap. The assembly is elongated by mechanical working thereof at an elevated temperature until the tube blank (1) has been converted into a tube of desired dimensions. After the elongation step, the core (12) is subjected to a treatment which results in the core being in a stretched condition throughout its length, and does not substantially stretch the tube (11). The core is removed from the tube, and subsequently subjected to drawing passes over a nondeformable mandrel thereby refining the precision of diametric and wall dimensions with improved ID and OD surface quality. There is also decoring and reinserting to improve final dimensions which results in the ability to fabricate smaller, longer tubes (111).

A method of making a drawn tubular product from a tubular bloom includes the steps of expanding the bloom 14 around and along its axis of generation, excluding one axial end portion thereof, inserting said excluded end portion through a die aperture 12 sized intermediate said excluded and expanded bloom portions, and then drawing the remainder of the bloom through the die aperture. The bloom 14 is initially supported by clamps 16 and is expanded by a tapered plug 20 which is forced into bore of the bloom 14 by a push rod 22, axial movement of the bloom being prevented by a stop plate 18 positioned between the die 12 and the bloom. When the plug 20 has expanded the majority of the length of the bloom the stop plate is removed and further movement of the push rod 22 causes the unexpanded end portion of the bloom to pass through the die 12. This end portion is then gripped by the draw carriage 28 and the bloom is drawn through the die 12, the plug 20 remaining in the bore in the bloom and acting as a floating mandrel. This work cycle may be repeated using a larger plug 20 until the desired wall thickness is reached. The push rod 22, which is mounted on a push carriage 24, and the draw carriage 28 are both operated by a hydraulic piston and cylinder 32 acting through cables 48 and 66. The invention relates to an automatic mandrel insertion apparatus for a tube drawing installation. A plug tool for forming internally helically ribbed tube comprises a plug body for being rotatably disposed in a die orifice of a drawing die. The plug body has a central longitudinal axis, a plurality of external grooves equally spaced about the axis and a plurality of external lands in alternating arrangement with the grooves. The grooves extend along the plug body at a helix angle to the axis. Each groove has a normal cross-section defined by a root surface and opposing flank surfaces extending angularly outwardly from the root surface to adjacent land surfaces. The flank surfaces extend angularly outwardly from the root surface in opposite directions at different angles from one another. A method for forming internally helically ribbed tube involves drawing a length of tubing over the plug body rotatably disposed in a die orifice of a drawing die and constricting the tubing in the drawing die to force the tubing into the grooves of the plug body to form a plurality of internal helical ribs in the tubing in correspondence to the grooves.

A tube for a cracker unit in which ethylene is produced withstands, without oxidizing or losing its strength, the elevated temperatures required to effect cracking, yet retards coking. The tube has a shell formed from stainless steel or high nickel alloy and a liner formed from an iron-aluminum alloy. The liner retards the deposit of carbon and its build up known as coking. To form the tube, a high alloy ingot is bored to provide a bore that extends through its center. Then a weld overlay is applied to surface of the bore, with the overlay being derived from a weld metal containing at least 16% aluminum and the balance essentially iron. Thereafter, the ingot is heated to its hot working temperature and extruded through sets of opposed rollers, with the direction of advance being in the direction of the bore. The extruding transforms the ingot into a lined tube.

Abstract of the Disclosure An alarm device for use with two engines, typically a pair of outboard motors attached to a boat is described. Each engine is provided with at least one sensor adapted to detect an abnormal condition, such as cooling water flow or oil temperature. The sensor output(s) are used as the input to a pair of warning devices, one for each engine, which typically will use a voice synthesizer to provide an audible warning. An output display is also provided, which is both able to indicate in which motor the abnormality has been detected, and also to discriminate between abnormality outputs arriving closely together from both engines. The audible warning for the second output to arrive is delayed until the warning for the first to arrive has been completed.
