A device for cold working pipe elements has two or more cams, each having a gear which meshes with a pinion to turn all of the cams. Each cam has a cam surface with a region of increasing radius and may have a region of constant radius extending around a cam body. Each cam also has a traction surface extending around a cam body. A discontinuity in each cam surface is aligned with a gap in the traction surface of each cam. The discontinuities and gaps provide clearance for insertion and removal of the pipe element between the cams to form a circumferential groove when the cams are rotated. 1. A cam for cold working a pipe element , said cam comprising:a cam body having an axis of rotation;a cam surface extending around said cam body, said cam surface comprising a region of increasing radius and a discontinuity of said cam surface, said radius being measured about and from said axis of rotation;a traction surface extending around said cam body, said traction surface comprising a plurality of projections extending transversely to said axis of rotation, said traction surface having a gap therein, said gap being aligned axially with said discontinuity of said cam surface.2. Blanks of high-strength steels, such as maraging steel, are used and one end of the blank has a threaded section inserted into a ring. The mandrel which is contoured in correspondence with the grooves in the tube is pushed into the bore of the blank which is coaxial with its outside surface. A steadying ring fits round the outside surface while press rollers engage the chamfered end of the blank. The mandrel is held in the machine arbour and helical grooves may be formed and the wall thickness of the blank may be subject to a reduction of over 50%. The process eliminates costly machining and also improves the fibre structure.

The multiple roller tool head is used for longitudinal cold rolling of splines into shafts, especially for shafts which have more than ten splines. The arrangement ensures stability of the deforming rollers in relation to the profile to be rolled relative to the profile centre line. Each roller (5) is built up of at least two discs whose profiled circumferential sections are such that the gap formed corresponds to the spline profile. A special radial groove is arranged in the support body which accommodates parts of the profiling roller for ensuring good radial stability. The shaft (4) of each composite roller has at its ends rectangular sections inserted into a rectangular seat in a slider (3). This ensures sufficient clearance for ensuring support for the roller.

For supporting the longitudinal movement of the cage, a transmission is formed, for example, by gear wheels which are rotatably disposed on the cage. Deep rolling equipment for cold working fillet radii of annular undercuts on opposite sides of main bearing and crank pin journals of an engine crankshaft while being rotatably driven. The equipment has pairs of jaws movable between an open position for receiving the crankshaft journal and a closed position for rolling the fillets thereof. The upper jaw mounts fillet rolling tools for high load rolling engagement in the annular undercuts and a lower tool on the opposing lower jaw for support of the journal. The lower tool has a pair of support rollers with annular journal support portions which contact and support the journal while the fillet radii of the undercuts on either side of the journal are being rolled. These support rollers importantly have work stabilizing annular flanges outboard of the support portion with larger diameters that ride in the undercuts and limit lateral movement of the crankshaft with respect to the rolling and support tools so that the crankshaft is not abraded or otherwise damaged by side contact of the jaws and tools with portions of the crankshaft.
