A tooth is provided for a circular disc felling saw. The saw tooth may have a generally square pyramidal shape with tips at each of the four corners. Each of the tips has an enlarged tip region where the tip is stepped outward from the adjacent sides. The front face of the tip remains smoothly continuous. The enlarged, or built-out region extends rearwardly a greater distance than the lateral step out distance, and the rearward build-out portion is relieved on planes parallel to the main portions of the planar sides of the pyramid. The tooth may have both leading and trailing cutting tips. Either one or both of the primary and secondary cutting tips may include a wear insert, such as a ceramic wear insert.

A planer head includes a cylindrical body having a first end, a second end and a crenelated curved face extending therebetween and including a plurality of pockets receiving a plurality of knives and knife holders. A clamping assembly connects each of the plurality of knife holders to their corresponding knives by frictional engagement. The clamping assembly includes at least one pair of clamping elements, each being disposed on a corresponding one of the first and second ends of the body. When moved in the longitudinal direction toward each other, the at least one pair of clamping elements forcing the plurality of knife holders in the radial direction thereby engaging in friction the knife holders with their corresponding knives and knife pockets of the body. A number of pairs of clamping elements is lower than a number of at least one of knives and knife holders. A kit for a planer head assembly, a clamping assembly, and a planer body are also presented. 1. A system and method are provided for producing wood curls with reliable consistency and resiliency. Moisture content of wood blocks is determined and a plurality of cutting knives are installed on a disc of a curling machine and set to extend about 0.012 inches from the face of the disc. The wood blocks are fed through the curling machine and the feed rate is set based on the moisture content of the blocks and the sharpness of the cutting knives and readjusted based on the resiliency of previously cut curls in order to produce wood curls of a desired resilience. 1. The invention relates to a cylindrical cutter having one or more helically running cutting edges for machining wood, wooden materials and plastic and to a method of producing it. The tool according to the invention has a tool inclination angle .lambda.s of the cutting edges within the range of 70° up to nearly 90°, in particular around 80° to 88°, and a rake angle &ggr;r between the tool orthogonal plane P o and the rake face A y, measured in the tool reference plane P r, of at least 5°. In the case of the tool, there is a substantial difference between the effective angles and the ground orthogonal angles. The chips are mainly peeled off and discharged axially. The chips are long-fibred and can be processed (as a by-product) in the pulp industry. Approximately constant cutting force ratios are achieved. The surface quality of the machined wood is very good. In the case of the production according to the invention, either the cutting edge is produced separately from the subsequent tool parent body and is fitted into the latter in a positive-locking manner, or a cutting edge made of cutting material is helically applied to a cylindrical parent body made of a backing material and is subsequently ground to produce the desired cutting edge form.

An improved knife clamping system for use in an apparatus for processing wood, such as a flaker, chipper or waferizer, that employs a rotary disc or ring (2), cutting knives (10), holding locations (8) mounted on the disc or ring (2) to receive the cutting knives (10), clamping members (35) to engage and hold the cutting knives in position and fasteners (36) to mount the clamping members to the holding locations. The improvement comprises providing a surface (30, 40) having an undulating profile to engage against the cutting knives (10). The undulating surface can be formed on the clamping member (35), at the holding location (8) or at both locations. The surface is shaped to deform to engage the cutting knives (10) with a uniform clamping load upon securing of the fasteners (36) to a pre-selected torque. The foregoing arrangement requires fewer fasteners (36) while still maintaining an adequate clamping force on the cutting knives (10). This makes parts less expensive and reduces the time to change the knives (10) as there are fewer parts to loosen and tighten.

The tools K, L are secured by a nut J between a washer H and flange G on a tubular p:ece F, which is pivoted eccentrically at M to a flange C on a sleeve B secured by a nut E and washer R to the cutter spindle A. Owing to the difference in the internal diameter of the piece F and the external diameter of the sleeve B, on the direction of rotation being reversed, the sleeve F swings on its bearings N, P about the pivot M, and brings the opposite cutting-tool into the cutting position, as shown by the full and dotted positions of the tools in Fig. 4.
