Robust low-level image features have been proven to be effective representations for a variety of visual recognition tasks such as object recognition and scene classification; but pixels, or even local image patches, carry little semantic meanings. For high-level visual tasks, such low-level image representations are potentially not enough. The present invention provides a high-level image representation where an image is represented as a scale-invariant response map of a large number of pre-trained generic object detectors, blind to the testing dataset or visual task. Leveraging on this representation, superior performances on high-level visual recognition tasks are achieved with relatively classifiers such as logistic regression and linear SVM classifiers.

An image processing apparatus comprising:an additional effective pixel appending unit configured to generate an image appended with additional effective pixels by executing appending processing for appending additional effective pixels required to extend image data of a first hierarchy in a scanning direction using pixels at an end portion of the image data in the scanning direction;a first generating unit configured to generate image data of a second hierarchy obtained by reducing the image data of the first hierarchy by applying filtering to the image appended with the additional effective pixels generated by said additional effective pixel appending unit; anda second generating unit configured to generate image data of a third hierarchy obtained by reducing the image data of the second hierarchy by applying filtering to the image data of the second hierarchy.2. A coin identification system and method is disclosed for determining the identity of a source coin by way of image processing. The system comprises a source coin image capture means, an image processing means, and an output that relays information to the user or sorts the coin according to its match results. The processing means compares at least one image of the source coin to a plurality of reference coin images, whereby the image of the source coin is manipulated and overlaid onto the reference coin images to determine if a match is available with a given probability. An embodiment of the system employs a coin collection and sorting device. Another embodiment contemplates a handheld electronic device that captures and processes the source coin. Both embodiments may connect to a remote server housing the reference coin information or store the information locally.

Up-sampling binary images for segmentation

A method of up-sampling binary images for segmentation is described. In an embodiment, digital images are down-sampled before segmentation. The resulting initial binary segmentation, which has a lower resolution than the original image, is then up-sampled and smoothed to generate an interim non-binary solution which has a higher resolution than the initial binary segmentation. The final binary segmentation for the image is then computed from the interim non-binary solution based on a threshold. This method does not use the original image data in inferring the final binary segmentation solution from the initial binary segmentation. In an embodiment, the method may be applied to all images and in another embodiment, the method may be used for images which comprise a large number of pixels in total or in single dimension and smaller images may not be down-sampled before segmentation.

Mosaic oblique images and methods of making and using same

A computer system running image processing software receives an identification of a desired geographical area to be imaged and collected into an oblique-mosaic image; creates a mathematical model of a virtual camera looking down at an oblique angle, the mathematical model having an oblique-mosaic pixel map of the desired area encompassing multiple source images; assigns surface locations to pixels included in the oblique-mosaic pixel map; creates a ground elevation model of the ground and vertical structures within the oblique-mosaic pixel map using overlapping source images of the desired geographical area, wherein the source oblique images were captured at an oblique angle and compass direction similar to that of the virtual camera; and reprojects, with the mathematical model, source oblique image pixels of the overlapping source images for pixels included in the oblique-mosaic pixel map using the ground elevation model to thereby create an oblique-mosaic image of the desired area.
