The rollers are formed of layers of varying hardness, so that the raw product can be easily turned in a lathe, and the finished product can be easily engraved and hardened ; the core proper is of a harder material. The roll consists of three layers a, b, c, of which the core c is formed of lime-sandstone, and the layer b is made softer by the admixture of sawdust. The outer layer a contains more sawdust, and is easily removed in a lathe. The layer b, when turned true, is engraved, and is then hardened by being coated with cement to which is applied powdered porcelain or metal powder, and the roll is then heated in a stove. When a new pattern is to be applied, the outer layer is removed by heat, and the roll b is turned in a lathe.

Imaging is accomplished by forming an imagewise electrical pattern in the ferroelectric layer using signals from the matrix-addressable microelectronic layer, and applying the electrically responsive marking media to the electrically polarized ferroelectric layer, creating thereon an identifiable image pattern. The marking media (dry or liquid toner) can then be transferred to a suitable receiver material to form the desired printed image. The pattern may be changed locally or entirely by repolarizing the ferroelectric layer using different signals from the microelectronic layer.

Provided is a media-fluid material set for use in preparing a waterless lithographic printing plate. The media fluid material set comprises a media with a support that bears a hydrophilic receiving surface having ink-receiving properties, together with a fluid material comprising a liquid carrier medium and a reactive transition metal complex of a fluorinated organic acid. After an application of the fluid material to the hydrophilic recieving surface, the reactive complex reacts to form a durable ink-releasing layer. Such a media-fluid material set can be advantageously used in preparing waterless lithographic printing plates with ink-releasing layers comprising such fluorinated reaction products. Also provided are imaged waterless lithographic printing plates with such ink-releasing layers made by an ink jet printing application or by laser-induced thermal ablation, and methods of making such waterless lithographic printing plates.

A plate for inkjet computer-to-plate and an inkjet printing method are disclosed. The plate is obtained by coating adhesive on the surface of metallic base followed by coating ink repulsive liquid, and a polymer film can be further covered on the obtained plate as protective layer. The adhesive improves the adhesion force between the metallic base and the ink repulsive layer, and the obtained ink repulsive layer is not sticky to the printing ink during printing. Therefore, without undergoing the treatments of electrolytic graining and anodizing, the plate of the present invention can achieve excellent printing durability and high resolution, thereby avoiding serious environmental pollution of the waste acid solution and waste base solution produced in the process of electrolytic graining and anodizing.

Lithographic printing is carried out by a novel process utilizing a zirconia ceramic as a printing plate. In this process, the surface of the zirconia ceramic printing plate is imagewise exposed to radiation which transforms it from a hydrophilic to an oleophilic state or from an oleophilic to a hydrophilic state, thereby creating a lithographic printing surface which is hydrophilic in non-image areas and is oleophilic and thus capable of accepting printing ink in image areas. The zirconia ceramic printing plate utilized in this process is capable of extremely long printing runs, is especially well adapted for direct digital laser imaging using images that are electronically captured and digitally stored, and can be reused by erasing the image from the ceramic surface by thermally-activated oxidation or laser-assisted oxidation.

Particles (e.g. developer particles) and a sensitized (e.g. electrophotographically) print sheet) are transferred to the surface of the ink resistant layer according to an image, and the particles are pressed (at e.g. 14 kgm/cm2) into the ink resistant layer until they touch the adhesive coating and are bonded to the substrate. The particles form an ink receptive region and where the adhesive is ink receptive the particles may be subsequently removed.

Process for a printing layer by first coating a support with an ink repelling layer of either an organopolysiloxane elastomer or heterophase polymeric compsns. contg. a silicon phase; an image is deposited on the surface of the layer then forced by pressure into the layer thereby forming a layer with ink receptive image zones. The polymers are either copolymers of an organopolysiloxane and a polymeric prod or an organopolysiloxane and a polymeric prod in the amorphous state having a Tg of >= the ambient temp. The layer is pref. 0.1 to 50 mu thick and to push the image into the layer a pressure of >=14 kg/cm2 is used. Pref. silicone gums are used which are hardenable at normal temps. or by heating or a mixt of both. Partic used for direct lithographic printing where a heavy ink coating is required. Avoids the complications of photosensitive layer processes and no wetting system is required.

Presensitised dry lithographic printing plate consists of a substrate, primer coat, light-sensitive coat and silicone rubber coat. The novelty is that the primer coat contains protein(s) selected from casein, soya protein and albumin. The primer coat contains casein or a combination of this and soya protein and/or albumin and is 0.1-50, pref. 1.0-20 microns thick. The amt. of protein is 10-98, pref. 30-95 (wt.)% of the primer coat. This coat also contains a hardener for gelatin; and a silane coupler, pref. of formula R3-nSi(X)Yn (I). R = H or 1-5C alkyl; X = alkyl, vinyl or an organic gp. with a functional gp. which can be bound to or has an affinity for an organic matrix polymer; pref. methyl, N-(beta-aminoethyl)- gamma-aminopropyl, gamma-methacryloyl-oxypropyl, N-(beta-(N-vinylbenzyl amino)ethyl- gamma-aminopropyl, gamma-glycidoxypropyl, gamma-mercaptopropyl, gamma-chloropropyl, gamma-anilinopropyl or C18H37-N(+)(CH3)2-(CH2)3-; Y = an organic gp., which is hydrolysed to produce an OH gp.; pref. 1-5C alkoxy, 3-5C alkoxyalkoxy, 2-5C acyloxy, dialkylamino, Cl or trimethylsilylamino; n = 2 or 3. To program or selectively image or erase a printing form (9) of ferroelectric material, in which the state of polarization of discrete areas of the printing form is controlled, utilizes an electron beam (12) generated by an electron gun (1, 3) which is impinged against a surface area (30) of the ferroelectric printing form. The beam is controlled in accordance with an image to be recorded, for subsequent printing, on the printing form; it is directed to the ferroelectric material by an electron beam focussing and accelerating system, for example similar to the system used in a television camera. The printing form (g) can be sealed with respect to an evacuated electron gun by a slide seal (14, 15) with a vacuum lock, or by a ferrofluidic vacuum lock (18, 20); or the electron gun can be closed by a Lenard window, or an end plate (27) with micro channels or micro ducts (26) therein. The intensity of the beam can be controlled by a suitable image control unit (32a).

1458722 Foamed cured silicone gums XEROX CORP 10 April 1974 [13 April 1973] 15894/74 Heading C3C [Also in Divisions B2 and B6] A lithographic printing plate is prepared by depositing particles on a layer of an uncured silicone gum containing a blowing agent, blowing and curing the silicone layer, and removing at least some of the particulate material. The particulate material resists escape of the blowing gas so that the plate has a porous ink-receptive structure in those areas covered by particulate material. The particulate material may be applied image-wise, e.g. as a toner image produced electrophotographically, or uniformly. Particulate material may be removed, after blowing, by evaporation, abrasion or dissolution. The silicone may be room temperature vulcanizable or heat-cured. The blowing agent may be activated by heat or by radiation, e.g. U.V. light. In the examples silicone gums containing ethylene carbonate or 2,2<SP>1</SP>-azo-bis(2- methylpropionitrile) were coated on to aluminium sheets, the coatings were contacted with developed images made of toner particles, heated and washed with acetone to remove all the toner particles and leave foamed areas corresponding to the toner patterns.

A description is given of a metal plate which is suitable, in particular, for the manufacture of an gravure printing sleeve. Said metal plate comprises a mechanically engravable metal layer on which there is at least one mechanically engravable a harder top layer, which top layer is wear-resistant, has a material stretch of 0.1-5%, and has a Vickers hardness of 400-1050. The mechanically engravable metal layer has a material stretch of less than 3% and a Vickers hardness of approximately 80-350. The top layer can be chosen from the metals or metal alloys which can be electrolessly or electrolytically deposited, or it may be composed of ceramic material. Expediently, the top layer can be hardened so that, after engraving, the metal plate has an engraved top layer having a still higher Vickers hardness. A method for manufacturing the present composite metal plate comprises applying, moreover, at least one top layer having a hardness which is greater than the hardness of the engravable metal layer and a thickness of not more than 10 µm to the mechanically engravable metal layer. Further, a process for mechanically engraving a pattern into an engravable metal basic layer is described.

A lithographic printing plate suitable for digital imaging by means of laser exposure is described. The plate consists of a substrate having coated thereon a layer or layers having an ink repelling top surface. The top layer contains a unique ink repelling co-polymer of poly(siloxanes) and is subject to thermal decomposition. At least one of the coated layers contains a laser radiation absorbing material to convert light to heat. The heated top layer is loosened or removed during exposure rendering the imaged surface ink accepting. The process requires no wet development step and no wiping. The method is well suited for use with relatively inexpensive and reliable high power diode lasers or ND ++ YAG lasers and can be configured as a flat bed, internal or external drum imager. It is well suited for imaging in a plate setter or directly on press. The material can be precoated on suitable supports or it can be sprayed, painted or coated on a reusable drum, plate or sleeve on press.

A printing plate material which can be adapted to digitization of the printing process and recycled and a method for renewing it. As the printing plate material, there can be used one which includes a substrate on the surface of which a coat layer containing a titanium oxide photocatalyst and at least one member selected from salts or oxides of Fe 2+ , Ni 2+ , Mn 2+ , Cr 3+ , and Cu 2+ is formed. In an initial state of the printing plate as prepared, it is adjusted to a state where the surface of the coat layer is hydrophobic. This surface is irradiated with ultraviolet rays to convert a part of the surface to a hydrophilic surface. This conversion is performed based on digital data corresponding to an image to be printed. In this case, the hydrophobic portion is used as a printing image portion and the hydrophilic portion is used as a non-printing image portion. After completion of the printing, the compound is applied again to change the surface of the coat layer into the initial state of the printing plate as prepared, in which the surface of the coat layer exhibits hydrophobicity again.

A plate for inkjet computer-to-plate and an inkjet printing method are disclosed. The plate is obtained by coating adhesive on the surface of metallic base followed by coating ink repulsive liquid, and a polymer film can be further covered on the obtained plate as protective layer. The adhesive improves the adhesion force between the metallic base and the ink repulsive layer, and the obtained ink repulsive layer is not sticky to the printing ink during printing. Therefore, without undergoing the treatments of electrolytic graining and anodizing, the plate of the present invention can achieve excellent printing durability and high resolution, thereby avoiding serious environmental pollution of the waste acid solution and waste base solution produced in the process of electrolytic graining and anodizing.

Under exposure to light through a negative transparency, the photoadhesive layer polymerizes in the exposed image area and adheres to the underlying silicone rubber layer, while remaining non-adhesive to the underlying silicone rubber layer in the unexposed non-image area. The unexposed photoadhesive layer only is removed to bare the underlying silicone rubber layer which is made an ink-repellent non-image area and the photoadhesive layer remaining in the exposed area is made an ink-receptive image area. The surface of the photoadhesive layer accepts ink from inking rollers, while the silicone rubber background area will not remove ink from the rollers and thus remains ink free.
