During collision cushion 78 is inflated and cables 82 cause it to move rearwardly and downwardly and thus, via cable 92, to extend nets 50. The nets may be of woven or open mesh nylon.

A distributed sensing system and method improves sensing of events that may require restraint deployment in a vehicle by distinguishing between deployment events and non-deployment events using data from more than one sensor. A transmission check process continuously monitors an incoming signal from a sensor and counts the number of data samples that exceed a selected value using a counter. If the counter value exceeds a selected threshold, the system indicates that the transmission check is fulfilled and allows deployment of the restraint. A correlation acceleration difference (CAD) algorithm calculates a CAD term corresponding to a degree of intrusion of a foreign object into a vehicle at a given time. Acceleration data from sensors disposed at supporting sides of the vehicle are checked if they respond to an event, and the absolute values of the acceleration data are subtracted from each other to obtain an absolute difference from which the CAD term is calculated. A method of reducing runtime in a system algorithm prioritizes calculations so that they are conducted on the side having the higher likelihood of having conditions requiring restraint deployment. Prioritizing calculations may also avoid refiring on a side that has already deployed a restraint, reducing the total number of calculations that the system needs to conduct. A method of evaluating a plausibility that a fire decision from a given sensor is the result of an event necessitating deployment of a restraint includes a plausibility check that checking the states of other sensors in the system before issuing a restraint firing request. The specific terms used in the plausibility check can be adjusted to accommodate different vehicle hardware configurations, vehicle setups and requirements.

Upon impact, rod 36 moves in the direction of arrow 400, causing arm 37 to pivot to move plate 85 in the direction of arrow 300 to compress a spring 38, thus disconnecting collar 88 from shaft 97. A latch 147 also becomes disengaged from a socket 149 on a bulkhead 301.

Hierin wird die Anwendung einer stoßdämpfenden Polsterung zur Energiedissipation (SDPED) in einem autonomen Straßenfahrzeug beschrieben. In einer Ausführungsform ist die SDPED mit der Fahrzeugkabine des Fahrzeugs verbunden und befindet sich die SDPED während eines normalen Fahrens auf Augenhöhe vor einem Insassen, der auf einem Vordersitz des Fahrzeugs sitzt. Des Weiteren umfasst das Fahrzeug ein steifes Element, das dazu konfiguriert ist, die SDPED zu unterstützen und während einer Kollision einer Deformation zu widerstehen, um eine Intrusion der Fahrzeugkabine zu reduzieren. Das steife Element befindet sich während eines normalen Fahrens auf Augenhöhe zwischen der SDPED und der äußeren Umgebung. Eine Kamera ist dazu konfiguriert, ein Video der äußeren Umgebung vor dem Insassen aufzunehmen, und ein Computer wird verwendet, um auf der Grundlage des Videos eine Darstellung der äußeren Umgebung vor dem Insassen auf Augenhöhe zu generieren, die dem Insassen unter Verwendung eines Displays gezeigt werden kann.

A safety device for a vehicle window

A safety device for use in a motor vehicle includes a restraining element which may be in the form of a net (see figure 6) initially stored within a housing (32) extending along an edge of a vehicle window (31). Pull cords (33,34) attached to the edges of the net extend around the periphery of the window via guide means (35 and 37 respectively) to a drive mechanism. Pull cord (34) is held around the periphery of the window by means of a yieldable material, such that when a vehicle deceleration greater than a pre-determined rate is sensed the drive mechanism applies a tension to the both the pull cords leading to pull cord (34) being released from the yieldable material and being wound in via guide means (37). There may be more than two pull cords operating on the safety restraint. There may be a pair of pull cords similar to pull cord (33) in that they remain fixed around the periphery of the window upon being tensioned, plus a pair of pull cords similar to (34) in that they are able to be displaced from their original position. Inflatable air bags (38 in figure 6) may also be attached to the safety restraint.

A vehicle safety system comprises a gate movably coupled to the vehicle, and a collapsible barrier coupled to the gate and to the vehicle. The gate is movable between a stowed position and a deployed position. In the stowed position, the gate collapses the collapsible barrier into a position adjacent to the vehicle such that the occupant may egress through an exit of the vehicle substantially unimpeded by the collapsible barrier or gate. In the deployed position, the gate and the collapsible barrier extend at least partially across the exit to impede egress of the occupant through the exit.

2118321 9419215 PCTABS00033 The present invention is a tubular structure (11) which inflates upon side or oblique vehicle impact to protect the occupants of a vehicle such as an automobile. The structure is mounted in its undeployed state along the periphery of the vehicle's side pillars (20, 21) and roof rail (23). The primary component of the present invention is a braided tube (15) linked to a gas generator (22). When a side impact is detected, the gas generator (22) is ignited, inflating the braided tube (15). As the braided tube (15) inflates, the diameter of the tube (15) increases and its length decreases. The tube (15) then pulls out of its storage location and forms a taut, semi-rigid structural member across the vehicle's side window (24).
