The present invention describes a sheet transfer cylinder in rotary sheet printing machines with a sheet bearing cylinder jacket which in the direction of the circumference of the cylinder is formed by a number of jacket segments arranged next to each other. The segments preferably extend over the length of the sheet transfer cylinder to cover at least the sheet bearing circumference of the sheet transfer cylinder and are equipped with locking elements at their ends which engage in corresponding grooves on the end surface of the cylinder. ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In a rotary applicator, suction rollers planetating about a central shaft are provided with suckers which are arranged in a row, project beyond the enveloping cylinders of the rollers and are placed on sucker carriers having suction air bores. The carriers communicate with suction air conduits and are rotatably but axially undisplaceably placed by means of sleeve-like tube members on the suction air conduits, the latter consisting of supporting tubes. The walls of the tubes and tube members are provided with bores which are in registry in the operative position of the suckers and of which the bores of the tube members communicate with the suction air bore of the sucker carrier. The suckers are rotatable to a position in which they are swung back within the enveloping cylinder and the walls of the tube members cover the bores of the supporting tube.

Apparatus for opening up folded sheets has a rotary withdrawing conveyor which extracts successive folded sheets from a stack and places successive withdrawn sheets into a path between two rotary spreading elements in such a way that the front edges of the sheet in the path are adjacent to the respective spreading elements and the back of the sheet is located at a level above the front edges. The spreading elements are driven in opposite directions and carry jaws which engage the respective front edges of a sheet therebetween in first angular positions of the spreading elements, whereupon the jaws move the sheet downwardly to move its front edges apart and to separate it from the withdrawing conveyor, and ultimately release the sheet in second angular positions of the spreading elements so that the sheet can descend onto a removing conveyor. The spreading elements are rotated by a crank drive which causes each spreading element to be accelerated during one half and to be decelerated during the other half of each of its revolutions. The spreading elements are in the process of being accelerated when they assume their first angular positions, and the spreading elements are in the process of being decelerated, or their peripheral speeds are relatively low, when they assume their second angular positions.

SHEET CLAMP COUNTERBALANCING SYSTEM FOR HIGH SPEED SHEET HANDLING DRUMS ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A counterbalancing and sheet clamp retention system for high speed sheet handling drums of the type in which leading and trailing edge clamping bars extend along the length of the drum periphery and are capable of movement between retracted and sheet clamping positions for automatic loading and unloading successive sheets to and from the drum. The clamping bars, supported at opposite ends for movement between their respective retracted and clamping positions, are engaged centrally along their length by a retaining device which moves to a clamping bar engaging position under centrif-ugal force as the rotational velocity of the drum reaches a predetermined value. The retaining device is a self-contained unit insertable through a radial opening in the drum and contains a pair of bell crank retainers each having a clamping bar engaging claw on one arm and a weight on the other arm so that centrifu-gal force operates to pivot the bell crank and bring the claws thereon into engagement with the closed sheet clamping bars. The drum is further counterbalanced by a fixed weight opposite from the movable bell crank weights. Further, the ends of the clamping bar are moved against the drum periphery to their sheet clamping positions by centrifugal force acting on counterbalanc-ing weight carried by radially movable brackets from which the ends of the respective clamping bars are supported.
