The semi-cylindrical one-piece glass profiles, for support posts for electrical and telephone cables and the like, has a semi-cylindrical wall of at least 3 m length, a width of at least 0.1 m and a thickness of at least 5 mm, with edges at right angles to the wall. Also claimed is a mfg. process where the molten glass is shaped between two rotating profiled units. They form a glass strip with a lateral section where the centre is thinner than the edges with relatively strong zones between the centre of the strip and the edges. The strip is distorted into a concave profile between its edges with a depth, as a spout with a hollow increasing curvature as far as the edges next to the shaping units, according to the required shape of the semi-cylindrical glass profile. The profile are annealed and cut to length.

A process is disclosed for the subsequent treatment of small glass particles, for example recycled glass granules with a grain size in a range of between 0.3 and 4 mm or glass beads with diameters in a range of between 0.1 and 2.3 mm. In order to produce any mouldings from such glass particles with a relatively low energy consumption, the surface of the glass particles is brought into contact with a low melting point silicate flux or varnish, for example of lead borosilicate, sodium borosilicate, fluorine borosilicate or their mixtures in an amount from 2 to 9 % by weight, preferably 3 to 5 % by weight, and the glass particles are then exposed to a thermal treatment in a range from 540 to 800 °C, preferably from 560 to 660 °C, during which the low melting point silicate flux or varnish is made to melt on the surfaces of the glass particles.

The roller 6 has a small peripheral groove midway along its length and the roller 7 is plain. This has the effect of producing a ribbon that is flat except for a tapered rib extending axially along its upper face. The other pairs of rollers are formed with complementary grooves and conical portions of increasing depth/height whereby the glass strip being formed becomes bent to the desired angle and the bend, when completed, is shaped as shown in full lines in Fig. 5 instead of the shape shown in broken lines resulting from bending a preformed flat strip.

Glass sheets are brought to their softening temperature, then they are caused to travel over a shaping bed of advancing elements for advancing them which are arranged along a path having a circular arc-shaped profile, the sheets progressively assuming their shape on entering the bed and over a first shaping zone, then being hardened by tempering or cooling in a second zone of the bed until they leave, and then the bent glass sheets thus obtained are recovered. The shaping bed is produced with a profile extending in a circular arc of more than 90°, and, on leaving the shaping bed, the hardened glass sheets are moved in a direction opposite that in which they were fed in.

Molten waste glass and rejected hot glass bottles from glass moulding processes are flattened in an apparatus comprising two rollers independently driven for rotation in opposing directions and having a gap therebetween through which the hot glass fed to the apparatus can be flattened, the two rollers being urged towards each other in normal operation at least one of the rollers being pivotally mounted. In order to prevent jamming of the apparatus there are provided means for swinging the pivotally mounted roller away from its normal operating position in the event of a foreign object being accidentally dropped into the apparatus and in the event of a power failure. Also there may be provided with a cam such that by rotation of the cam the pivotally mounted roller can be moved and the normal operating gap between the rollers altered. The gap between the rollers can be altered according to the rate of glass feed, the nature of glass fed to the apparatus and the required size of cullet granules. Thereby maximum efficiency of the apparatus can be achieved over a great range of rates and types of glass feed.

A process and apparatus for producing glass foil is disclosed in which a thin glass foil is produced by conveying a glass melt from a rotatable crucible of a smelting furnace through an annular distribution reservoir and a distributing disk having flow-through slots. Jets of glass emerge from the flow-through slots and are combined at a funnel-shaped wall into a hollow, cylindrical glass mass. Due to its weight and to heating by pressurized, gas-heated heating and cooling zones, the cylindrical glass mass flows downward, and is stretched until it reaches a pre-determined wall thickness by auxiliary conveyor belts. The hollow cylinder of glass is then split on one side by a separating device, flattened, conveyed to a bath of liquids, and then drawn-off at full width in the form of a glass foil by a draw-off guide roller. After the glass foil is drawn-off, the auxiliary conveyor belts are moved laterally so that they are no longer in physical contact with the glass cylinder. The glass foil is conveyed from the bath of liquids, through an after-treatment zone wherein the glass foil is treated, and to a device for coiling the treated glass foil.

Relates to the drawing of a continuous ribbon of glass from a tank in a substantially horizontal direction. The bottom of the drawing tank 2 slopes upwardly to a fairly long spout 6 wherein the depth of the glass is but little greater than the thickness of the ribbon to be formed. The bottom of the tank and the spout are heated by conduction, by electric heaters 10, 14 and the surface of the glass is cooled, by convection by water-cooled air-blowing and suction tubes 15, 17, 19, 20. The spout, at least, is made from a material of low overall emissivity e.g., pure, or substantially pure, alumina, magnesia or silica, ,and the spout may be a separate member removable from the pot 2. Alternatively the spout may be made of ordinary silico-aluminous material the bottom and sides of which are covered by an electrically heated platinum sheet. The vault 22 of the spout may be made of material of high emissivity, e.g., magnesia or chrome-magnesia containing more than 5 per cent iron oxides which ensures that heat radiated from the glass is reflected back. Alternatively the lower face of the vault may be lined with a platinum sheet. These features, taken together, ensure that a maximum temperature gradient is established between the upper and lower surfaces of the glass in the spout whereby the stream of glass comprises a film of high mobility at its lower surface and a skin of high viscosity at its upper surface. The lower surface of the sheet is rapidly hardened by blower and suction tubes 27, 28 immediately after leaving the spout. The spout may be slightly concave along its longitudinal axis and the lateral walls may have longitudinal rounded grooves along their inner edges. Specification 782,149 is referred to.

In addition, in the case of small parts produced by press moulding, an undesirable peripheral edge, caused by the material, can be seen. According to the process of the invention, the glass blanks 16 are roll formed in a freely supported manner, with a supply of heat, by means of two profiling rolls 14, 15 driven in the same direction of rotation with a correspondingly high speed. In the process, the glass blanks 16 have to have the same volume before their roll forming as the finished small parts 10. The heat supply takes place intermittently, only shortly before and during the roll forming of a glass blank 16, so that after conclusion of a roll forming, the finished small part 10 can be air cooled and as a result brought into a dimensionally stable state in which it is then ejected by means of an ejector 24 from the gap between the two profiling rolls 14, 15. <IMAGE>
