Strong acids of MW less than 200 and ionization constant greater than 1.0 x 10-3 are separated from acidic polymers of MW at least 1000 by dialysis through an anion-exchange membrane. Preferred anion-exchangers are those with quaternary ammonium groups, particularly those with an anion-exchange capacity of at least 1.0 meq./g. of dry membrane. Particularly mixtures separated are those resulting from the sulphonation of vinyl aromatic polymers, e.g. polyvinyl toluene or styrene/ divinyl benzene resin, and containing sulphuric acid together with the sulphonated polymer. Copolymers are described of at least 75% by weight of tert-butyl styrene, from 1% to 24% by weight of a copolymerizable second monomer and from 1% to 10% by weight of methacrylic acid, the copolymers having certain specified solubility and rheological characteristics in AVTUR 50 aviation kerosene. A process for making the copolymers by aqueous emulsion polymerization of the monomers under certain defined conditions is also described. The copolymers are useful as additives to liquid hydrocarbon aircraft fuels for the purpose of reducing the tendency of such fuels to form inflammable mists under shock conditions.

A process for the preparation of moulding compositions for manufactured products is described. The said process is implemented by mixing a) a chlorostyrene polymer having an intrinsic viscosity higher than 0.6 dlg<-1>, measured in toluene at 22 DEG C, with b) a crude graft polymer of chlorostyrene on butadiene rubber, in which the elastomer/chlorostyrene ratio is between 40/60 and 70/30, the components a) and b) being mixed in such a ratio that the polymerised diene content is less than 20 %. The mixtures obtained have properties such as good workability and high impact resistance. Moreover, they are self-extinguishing and show a high heat distortion point.

A monovinyl aromatic hydrocarbon and/or an ar-halo monovinyl aromatic hydrocarbon is polymerized using t-butylperoxytrimethylsilane as catalyst. The monomer may be styrene or p-chlorostyrene or a mixture of styrene and a -methylstyrene, acrylonitrile or methyl methacrylate, of o-, m- and p-methylstyrenes, or a solution of a rubbery butadiene-styrene (75 : 25) copolymer in styrene. A catalytic amount of the silane may be dissolved in the monomer which is then heated at 75-125 DEG C. until 15-45% conversion to polymer and the temperature is then raised from 75-95 DEG C. to 180-200 DEG C. over a period of 3-7 hours and kept at that temperature for 0.5-5 hours. The temperature during the last part of the reaction is preferably 180-220 DEG C. The catalyst may include a second peroxy compound of half-like 10-15,000 hours in benzene at 100 DEG C., e.g. di-t-butyl peroxide. Specification 726,057 is referred to.
