Compositions having solid core particles with functionalizing layers over at least a portion of the outer surfaces of the solid core particles are described. The functionalizing layers are formed from a reaction product of a 1,1-di-activated vinyl compound, or a multifunctional form thereof, or a combination thereof. 1. A particle composition comprising:a solid core particle comprising an outer surface; anda functionalizing layer over at least a portion of the outer surface of the solid core particle;wherein the functionalizing layer comprises a reaction product of a 1,1-di-activated vinyl compound, or a multifunctional form thereof, or a combination thereof.2. The particle composition of claim 1 , wherein the functionalizing layer comprises:a bond between the solid core particle and the 1,1-di-activated vinyl compound, or multifunctional form thereof, or combination thereof; and/ora polymerization reaction product of the 1,1-di-activated vinyl compound, or multifunctional form thereof, or combination thereof, physically and/or chemically adsorbed onto the surface of the solid core particle.3. The particle composition of claim 1 , wherein the solid core particle comprises clay claim 1 , mica claim 1 , talc claim 1 , a zeolite claim 1 , carbon black claim 1 , or an oxide claim 1 , sulfide claim 1 , sulfate claim 1 , selenide claim 1 , arsenide claim 1 , cyanide claim 1 , cyanate claim 1 , halide claim 1 , carbonate claim 1 , hydroxide claim 1 , nitrate claim 1 , nitride claim 1 , coordination complex claim 1 , or organometallic complex of a transition element or p-block element claim 1 , or a combination of any thereof4. The particle composition of claim 3 , wherein the solid core particle comprises an oxide claim 3 , sulfide claim 3 , sulfate claim 3 , selenide claim 3 , arsenide claim 3 , cyanide claim 3 , cyanate claim 3 , halide claim 3 , carbonate claim 3 , hydroxide claim 3 , nitrate claim 3 , nitride claim 3 , coordination complex claim 3 , or organometallic ...
