A liquid crystal compound and a liquid crystal medium are described. The liquid crystal compound is stable to heat and light and has a large dielectric anisotropy and a large optical anisotropy. The liquid crystal composition contains a chiral agent and liquid crystal containing a compound having three electron-withdrawing groups as end groups of a structure where a plurality of rings including at least one aromatic ring is linked to each other directly or with a linking group laid therebetween. At least one of the three electron-withdrawing groups includes a trifluoromethyl group. The peak of the diffracted wavelength on the longest wavelength side in the reflectance spectrum of the liquid crystal composition is less than or equal to 450 nm, preferably less than or equal to 420 nm. In addition, the occurrence of defective display of a liquid crystal display device including the polymer/liquid crystal composite is suppressed. In the polymer/liquid crystal composite exhibiting a blue phase, a plurality of domains are included and defective orientations easily occur at boundaries between the domains. Thus, by lowering orientation periodicities at boundaries between the domains, a defect-free orientation to high orientation periodicities at the boundary between adjacent domains can be obtained. Specifically, the polymer/liquid crystal composite exhibiting the blue phase includes the plurality of domains each of which has a size of 3 μm or less.

A multifunctional liquid crystalline photoreactive polymer in which at least some of the polymer side-chains have an ultraviolet photoreactive moiety and at least some of the polymer side-chains have a calamitic mesogenic moiety are provided. At least some of the polymer side-chains have a photo-curable moiety a thermal-curable moiety. In some embodiments, the polymer is in the form of a co-polymer. In some embodiments, the polymer is in the form of a ter-polymer. The polymer is used in applications that require stable birefringement films. Such films are produced from the polymer by subjecting the polymer to ultra-violet light to cause side-chain cross-linking thereby inducing anisotropy.
