The dispersant can be of the Mannich type, the succinimide type, the amine type or the Koch type, and may be boronated. A metal-containing detergent (e.g. an overbased calcium sulfonate) may also be present.

A B S T R A C T PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF POLYALKENYL-SUBSTITUTED SUCCINIC ANHYDRIDE, THE PRODUCT SO PREPARED, AND A LUBRICATING OIL COMPOSITION CONTAINING THE PRODUCT The preparation of PIB/MALA in high yields (> 90%) by reacting polyisobutene (PIB) with maleic anhydride (MALA) in the presence of chlorine has the disadvantage of causing a relatively high chlorine percentage (? 6%w) in the PIB/MALA product. An after-reaction without chlorine addition (in the presence of excess MALA) results, after MALA has been stripped off, in a product with a chlorine percentage of ? 0.4%w. This percentage can now be further decreased to < 0.2%w when sub-jecting the PIB/MALA product to a thermal treatment at about 200°C after excess MALA has been stripped off.

Internal combustion engines exhibit improved efficiency of the emissions control system by using a lubricating oil composition of a base oil, an alkali or alkaline earth metal-containing detergent; a metal salt of one or more phosphorus-containing compounds represented by the formula (I) , wherein X1 and X2 are independently O or S, and R1 and R2 are independently hydrocarbyl groups, the average total number of carbon atoms in R1 and R2 for the one or more phosphorus-containing compounds being at least 10.4; and an acylated nitrogen-containing compound having at least about 10 alphatic carbon atoms and a TBN of at least about 2; the lubricating oil composition being characterized by a phosphorus concentration of up to about 0.12% by weight and the substantial absence of copper, thereby generating a lean-phosphorus containing exhaust gas.

The invention relates to the use of quaternized nitrogen compounds as a fuel and lubricant additive or kerosene additive, such as in particular as a detergent additive, for decreasing or preventing deposits in the injection systems of direct-injection diesel engines, in particular in common rail injection systems, for decreasing the fuel consumption of direct-injection diesel engines, in particular of diesel engines having common rail injection systems, and for minimizing the power loss in direct-injection diesel engines, in particular in diesel engines having common rail injection systems; the invention further relates to the use as an additive for petrol, in particular for operation of DISI engines. 2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein a content of the reaction product in the gasoline fuel or diesel fuel is from 10 to 5000 ppm by weight based on the total amount of the middle distillate fuel or diesel fuel.3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein addition of the reaction product reduces the level of deposits in the intake system of a gasoline engine.4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein addition of the reaction product reduces the level of deposits in the intake system of DISI and PFI engines.5. Metal powder compositions for pressed powder metallurgy, and methods of forming metal parts using the metal powder compositions. The metal powder compositions include a metal powder and a lubricant system, which are pressed to form a green compact. When the green compact is heated during a delubing process, the lubricant system provides a reactive carbon coating on the surface of the metal powder, which upon subsequent sintering, reacts with metal oxides present on the surface of the metal powder to form gas that is easily removed from the system. Removing the metal oxides from the surface of the metal powder provides a more dense metal part, and allows for sintering of the green compact without the need for hydrogen gas, which would otherwise be needed to remove the metal oxides on the surface of the metal powder. 1. The invention provides compositions, including lubricating compositions containing the described dispersant viscosity modifier, such as heavy duty diesel lubricating compositions. The invention further relates to the use of the described dispersant viscosity modifier to improve the film thickness and/or antiwear performance of a lubricating composition, for example, a heavy duty diesel lubricating composition. The improved dispersant viscosity modifier of the invention is specially designed to protect against valve train and other crankcase wear in lubricating applications, including heavy soot conditions such as heavy duty diesel lubricating applications.
