... In a dry-spinning apparatus for the production of artificial filaments, the evaporative atmosphere travels in a closed circuit comprising, in the direction of travel, an evaporating chamber in which the filaments are produced, a cooling chamber situated beyond the point of emergence of the filaments, and a heating chamber which is in communication with the evaporating chamber, these successive chambers being connected with one another without any constrictions, and without any means for accelerating or slowing up the circulation of the gas or vapour. The gas or vapour which circulates in the direction of the filaments moves with the same speed as the movement of the filaments, the motion of the gas or vapour being caused solely by mechanical entrainment by the movement of the filaments. As shown, the left-hand side of the upper part of tube 1 is used as the evaporative chamber of the dry spinning cell. The spinning-solution is extruded through nozzle 6, and the filaments ...

In a process for the production of straw-like material a heavy artificial filamentary product formed from a spinning solution containing a cellulose derivative and a plasticizer therefor is subjected to an operation of moulding under heat to produce permanent irregularities of shape such as crinkles, twists, partial twists, patterns or frizzed effects therein. The heavy artificial filamentary product may be formed by coalescing a number of fine filaments with a total weight of about 75 denier. The invention is of particular importance with straws of 500--2000 denier or more. The filamentary product may contain any cellulose derivative, together if desired with other materials such as cotton or wool incorporated with the cellulose derivative by means of solvents and pressure. The plasticizer preferably acts as a solvent for the cellulose derivative at elevated temperatures. Suitable plasticizers are e.g. triphenyl or tricresyl phosphate, paratoluene sulphonamide, triethylene glycol, diethylene ...

Improvements in and relating to the production of artificial threads by dry spinning

Artificial threads are produced by forming a number of filaments by a dry-spinning process in a spinning cell, withdrawing the bundle of filaments so formed from the cell, passing the bundle over and in contact with only a portion of the peripheral surface of a fixed and nonrotatable rod which is substantially at right angles to the path of the filaments, so that the bundle is formed into a ribbon of substantially parallel filaments, and then collecting the bundle of filaments as a twisted thread. The spinning machine may be provided with two brackets into which the rod may be dropped when required, the rod being heavy enough to maintain its position during operation against the forces exerted by the filament bundle. A single rod may be used for contacting all the threads in a conventional battery of spinning units. In the example, a cellulose acetate solution is extruded into a spinning cell, and the thread from the cell is passed over a one-inch diameter steel bar placed horizontally ...
