In at least one implementation, a method for forming openings for a stitched seam in a composite panel having an outer layer, and a substrate behind the outer layer includes providing a laser beam onto the substrate, with the laser beam forming an opening through the substrate but not through the outer layer, and moving at least one of the laser or the substrate relative to the other so that a new opening can be formed that is spaced from the already formed opening. Successive openings can be formed in desired locations around the panel to facilitate subsequent panel stitching. In at least some implementations, the laser may form such openings while stitches are formed in the panel, wherein a stitch is provided in a previous opening while or nearly at the same time the laser forms a different opening for a subsequent stitch.

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A slide fastener stringer includes a stringer tape and a series of fastener elements sewn to the stringer tape on one of the opposite surfaces thereof along its one longitudinal edge by means of double locked stitches composed of a needle thread and a looper thread. The needle thread includes a thermoplastic monofilament yarn, and the looper thread includes a spun or multifilament yarn. The stitching has been done from the tape side of the slide fastener stringer. Loops of the looper thread hardly project from the topmost surface of the needle thread loops so that a slider is not likely to wear it out. Each of the needle thread has a constricted por-tion which serves to keep the looper thread loops from becoming loose. After stitching of the fastener elements to the tape, the thermoplastic monofilamentary needle thread has been heat set to suitably shrink and then become dimensionally stable. The invention provides a stringer enabling a very smooth threading of a slider.

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A slide fastener stringer is disclosed of the type wherein the coupling elements are of the type having each a pair of upper and lower legs, one at each respective face of the stringer tape. The coupling elements are secured to the tape by sewing stitches composed of a needle thread and a looper thread. The needle thread has a plurality of loops each passing through the tape from the lower surface of the tape and extending between respective adjacent pairs of the fastener elements. The looper thread has a plurality of loops each extending across and over one of the upper legs. The interlacings and interloopings of the needle thread with the loops of the looper thread are disposed between respective adjacent pairs of the upper legs. The needle thread consists of a thermally contractable monofilament yarn, while the looper thread is of a non-monofilament yarn. After the needle thread is sewn to the tape, it is shrunk by heat-setting. The invention improves dimensional stability of the stringer.

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Sheet material is provided with an elongate raised portion, the elongate raised portion comprising a ridge formed in the sheet material, a strip fastened to the sheet material and extending along the top of the ridge to form a rib, and cord stitching which extends lengthwise along the strip and extends through the thickness of the sheet material on either side of the strip and, on the side of the sheet material opposite to the strip, from one side of the strip to the other. The elongate raised portion is primarily intended to be decorative. Such sheet material is especially useful for forming at least part of the upper of a shoe.

The fixing of the air bag into the vehicle is by sewing reinforcing strips (4,5) along the edges of a face (3) of the inflatable air bag (1). Fixing is ensured by a seam (6, 7), the line of which is formed by a succession of segments of a broken line. Each segment of the broken line is located to form a non zero angle with the direction of the constraints, which are exerted, when the bag is inflated. The number of points on each segment of the line may be two, which forms a zig-zag seam, or a larger number. The angle formed between the two segments the length of the stitch and the number of stitches is variable according to the materials used.

In an overedge seam comprising depth-stitch thread-loops 13 concatenated with edgeembracing thread-loops 17, designed particularly for buttonholes and the like, the edge-embracing loops 17 pass through the depth-stitch loops 13 on one face of the fabric (the lower in the drawing) in a direction away from that face while on the other face (the upper in the drawing) the depth-stitch loops 13 pass through the edge-embracing loops 17 in a direction towards this face. The concatenation of the loops is preferably between the edge and the depth-stitches on the former face and at the position of the depth stitches on the latter face, as shown, giving a padded effect on one face and resembling hand-stitching. It is stated that the stitch is easily set and thus suitable for delicate fabrics.
