A method of treating a load of fabric items in a fabric treating appliance according to cycle of operation , the fabric items having a surface with at least a first charge , the fabric treating appliance comprising a tub defining a fabric treating chamber for receiving the fabric items for treatment according to the cycle of operation , the method comprising:introducing into the treating chamber a dye fixative carrying a second charge opposite the first charge;introducing into the treating chamber a surface charge modifying agent carrying the first charge; andintroducing into the treating chamber a treating liquid including at least one treating agent configured to remove soils carrying the first charge;wherein the dye fixative inhibits release of dye molecules from fabric items within the treating chamber and the surface charge modifying agent at least one of neutralizes the second charge carried by the dye fixative or electrostatically repels the removed soils to prevent redeposition of the removed soils onto the surface of fabric items within the treating chamber.2. Artificial filaments, e.g. of cellulose acetate, are soaked in liquids comprising alkylolamines and/or their derivatives, the o -amino-alkylamides of fatty acids, di- or poly-hydric alcohol derivatives in which some of the hydroxy groups are esterified by fatty acids, or mixtures thereof, and cut into staple lengths, both wetting and cutting being carried out continuously with the production of the filaments. The treatment is stated to remove difficulties due to electrification of the fibres and slipping of the fibres over one another. Suitable substances are mono-, di-, or tri-ethanolamine, propanolamine, dioxypropylamine, hydroxyethylaniline, and the salts, soaps, esters, or acid amides of such compounds with higher fatty acids, e.g. capric, lauric, myristic, oleic, and stearic acids; also glycerol mono-oleate, glycerol di-oleate, ethylene glycol mono-oleate, diethylene glycol mono-oleate, or the corresponding esters of stearic, palmitic, or ricinoleic acid. Solutions of ethanolamines in paraffin oils are particularly mentioned. The fibres may be dried directly, or may be subjected to a preliminary centrifuging operation to bring the liquid content down to about 30-40 per cent, in which case a more concentrated alkylolamine &c. solution is used. Roughening media such as silica, barytes, lithopone, kieselguhr, or the soluble salts of Specification 372,797, and also a lubricant, e.g. olive oil, may be applied conjointly with or separately from the alkylolamines or the like. The bodies applied to the fibres may be removed immediately after spinning, or may be removed by the usual scouring operation applied to the fabric. The fibres may be spun alone or in admixture with other fibres, e.g. fibres of viscose, silk, cotton, or wool. Sulphonated arylides of aliphatic carboxylic acids, obtained by treating, in the absence of a metal halide, saturated aliphatic or cycloaliphatic carboxylic acids containing from six to sixteen carbon atoms in the molecule, or more if the acids are unsaturated, or their derivatives with primary aromatic amines free from nitro or auxochromic groups, other than the primary amino group or sulpho groups, and sulphonating the resulting arylides if they do not already contain sulphonic or sulphuric ester groups are used as dispersing and scouring agents. In Examples: (1) oleic anilide is treated with sulphuric monohydrate in the presence of trichlorethylene: (2) the fatty acids containing 12-15 carbon atoms in the molecule prepared by oxidation of paraffin wax by means of air, are treated with aniline and then sulphonated by means of oleum. The product may be used for scouring. The arylides or their salts may be used alone or in association with other wetting or emulsifying agents, e.g. soaps, turkey red oils or aromatic sulphonic acids, particularly poly nuclear aromatic sulphonic acids, hydroxy alkyl amines, quaternary ammonium or their salts, protective colloids, e.g. glue, gelatine or vegetable mucilages or gums, salts, e.g. soda, sodium bicarbonate, waterglass, common salt, normal or acid sodium sulphate, organic solvents e.g. monocresylethyleneglycolether or trichlorethylene or bleaching agents e.g. perborates, percarbonates or sodium p-toluenesulphonic chloramide. The sulphonated arylides are stable in neutral, acid or alkaline baths and may be used for dispersing or emulsifying alkaline earth metal soaps, dyestuff or insoluble colouring materials, fats or waxes. Para-type aromatic polyamide short fibers are attached with a phosphate ester alkali metal salt of an alcohol having a carbon number of 12 having a molar fraction of a monoester salt of from 45 to 70% by mol and a molar fraction of a diester salt of from 10 to 40% by mol in an amount of from 0.05 to 1.0% by weight based on the weight of the fibers, whereby such para-type aromatic polyamide short fibers excellent in spinning property are obtained that are excellent in bundling property and antistatic property, and are low in adhesion property causing less twining on rollers and less formation of scums.

Artificial filaments, e.g. of cellulose acetate, are soaked in liquids comprising alkylolamines and/or their derivatives, the o -amino-alkylamides of fatty acids, di- or poly-hydric alcohol derivatives in which some of the hydroxy groups are esterified by fatty acids, or mixtures thereof, and cut into staple lengths while still wet. The treatment is stated to remove difficulties due to electrification of the fibres and slipping of the fibres over one another. Suitable substances are mono-, di-, or triethanolamine, propanolamine, dioxypropylamine, hydroxy-ethylaniline, and the salts, soaps, esters, or acid amides of such compounds with higher fatty acids, e.g. capric, lauric, myristic, oleic, and stearic acids; also glycerol mono-oleate, glycerol di-oleate, ethylene glycol mono-oleate, diethylene glycol mono-oleate, or the corresponding esters of stearic, palmitic, or ricinoleic acid. Solutions of ethanolamines in paraffin oils are particularly mentioned. The hanks &c., drained to contain about their own weight of liquid may be cut in this condition and dried, the drying being preceded if desired by a centrifuging operation to bring the liquid content down to about 30-40 per cent. In the latter case a more concentrated alkylolamine &c. solution is used. Roughening media such as silica, barytes, lithopone, kieselguhr, or the soluble salts of Specification 372,797, and also a lubricant, e.g. olive oil, may be applied conjointly with or separately from the alkylolamines or the like. The bodies applied to the fibres may be removed immediately after spinning, or may be removed by the usual scouring operation applied to the fabric. The process may be applied to yarn consisting of one kind of fibre only, e.g. cellulose acetate yarn, or to mixtures of fibres, e.g. mixtures of cellulose acetate fibres with viscose, silk, cotton, or wool. Specification 388,427 is referred to.

A relatively durable oil and water repellency is thus imparted to the fiber; which durability can be enhanced by contacting said compound in situ in the fiber with a polyepoxide or polyisocyanate. Alternatively, partially fluorinated N,N-disubstituted amides, esterified also with the same above-cited hydroxyl-containing organic radicals, can be used. The resulting fibers can be dyed, after or together with said treatment imparting repellency.

Alkylene oxide addition products are prepared of organic carboxylic acid alkanolamides. The alkylene oxide may be ethylene or propylene oxide or glycide and from 2 to 20 alkylene oxide groups may be added to the alkanolamide. The acids used in the formation of the carbon alkanolamide may be a fatty acid or mixture of fatty acids having about 6 to 18 atoms per molecule, a naphthenic acid, a resin acid or an alkylated aromatic acid, and the acid may be amidated with monoethanolamine. In examples: (1) 4 molecules of ethylene oxide are added to 1 molecule of the monoethanolamide of coconut oil fatty acids; (2) 4 molecules of ethylene oxide are added to 1 molecule of stearic acid monoethanolamide. Specification 763,215 is referred to.ALSO:Textile materials are treated with an alkylene oxide addition product of a carboxylic acid alkanolamide, which may be an addition product of ethylene oxide, propylene oxide or glycide and an amide derived from monoethanolamine and a fatty acid having from 6 to 18 carbon atoms, naphthenic acid, resin acids, or an alkylated aromatic acid wherein from 2 to 20 alkylene oxide molecules are introduced into each ethanolamide molecule. The invention also relates to a washing or cleaning method comprising the following method steps: (i) providing a washing or cleaning solution comprising said washing or cleaning agent; (ii) bringing a soiled object, preferably a soiled textile, in particular a soiled flat textile, into contact with the washing or cleaning solution according to step (i). When in the form of a stable homogeneous liquid, the composition may contain (a) a quaternized fatty amide, an aqueous emulsion of partially oxidized polyethylene, a fatty amphoteric compound, or a fatty amide as described hereinafter as the softening agent, (b) hydrofluorosilicic acid, ammonium silicofluoride, zinc silicofluoride, ammonium acid fluoride, potassium acid fluoride, or orthophosphoric acid as the souring agent, and (c) water. When in the form of a stable dry solid, the composition may contain (a) a quaternized fatty amide, a fatty amphoteric compound or a fatty amide as described hereinafter as the softening agent, and (b) ammonium silicofluoride, potassium silicofluoride, sodium silicofluoride, zinc silicofluoride, ammonium acid fluoride, sodium acid fluoride or potassium acid fluoride. A method of preparing the liquid composition is provided which insures that it remains stable and homogeneous while awaiting use. Stable homogeneous aqueous stock solutions : are also prepared from the liquid or solid compositions of the invention.
