The invention relates to a composition for enhancing the strength or sizing properties of a cellulosic fiber, comprising a) a self-emulsifying isocyanate and b) a coupling agent. The invention also relates to a kit of the composition, a process for enhancing the strength or sizing of a cellulosic fiber, products made from the process, and modified cellulosic fiber. The coupling agent and self-emulsifiable isocyanante can be added at a number of points in the paper making process. In one embodiment, the coupling agent and self-emulsifiable isocyanate are independently added to the cellulosic fiber at any point between the exit of the machine chest (5) and the screens (11) just prior to the headbox. In one embodiment, the coupling agent and self-emulsifiable isocyanate are added to the cellulosic fiber before or after the screens (11). In one embodiment, the coupling agent and self-emulsifiable isocyanate are added to the cellulosic fiber at the stuff or headbox (6). In a prefered embodiment, the self-emulsifiable isocyanate and coupling agent are added at the fan pump (8). Even more preferably, the self-emulsifiable isocyanate is added just prior to the fan pump (8) and the coupling agent just after the fan pump (8). The coupling agent and self-emulsifiable isocyanate can be added at the same point, either in separate lines or as a premixed composition, or at different points in the process.

A sizing composition and a method of sizing a cellulosic fiber material are disclosed. The sizing composition comprises an aqueous dispersion of a rosin material and a polyaluminium compound, and is characterised in that the polyaluminium compound is a polyaluminium phosphate sulphate compound. The polyaluminium phosphate sulphate compound should comprise at least 5 % by weight, calculated as aluminium on the amount of rosin material in the composition. It is preferred that the sizing composition also comprises a synthetic sizing agent in addition to the rosin material. The dispersion preferably also includes a dispersing agent and has a dry content of at least 1 % by weight. The sizing composition is used for the sizing of cellulosic fibre materials, such as paper, board or paper board by adding 0.01-5 % by weight, calculated as dry sizing agent on dry cellulose fibers, of the sizing composition to the cellulosic fibre material, preferably to a cellulose stock for internal sizing of the cellulosic fibre material.

A non-ionic emulsifier, for ketene dimers (see Group III) is made by reacting ethylene oxide with a hexitol in a mole ratio of from 30 to 75 moles of ethylene oxide per mole of the hexitol to form a polyoxyethylene ether of the hexitol, reacting the polyoxyethylene ether of the hexitol with a 12 to 20 carbon atom fatty acid in a ratio from 0.5 to 0.85 moles of fatty acid per hydroxyl equivalent of the polyoxyethylene ether to form an ester, treating the ester with either an acylating, alkylating or etherifying agent, to reduce the hydroxyl number below about 10. The reaction of the polyoxyethylene ether with the fatty acid may be carried out in the presence of a small proportion of a catalyst, preferably in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide. The reduction of the hydroxyl group may be accomplished preferably by acylation but numerous other methods are described. (1) Acylation with anhydrides or acid chlorides of lower fatty acids such as acetic acid and propionic acid. (2) Ketenes such as ketene and methyl ketene may be used. (3) Carbamate esters may be formed with isocyanates. (4) Etherification with dimethyl sulphate and alkali or alkyl iodide and a sodium derivative of the hydroxyl material. (5) Condensation with olefine (isobutylene) in presence of acid catalyst. (6) Cyanoethylation with acrylonitrile and a tertiary amine. Specifically exemplified are the preparation of (1) acetylated polyoxyethylene sorbitol esters, of oleic acid with an acid number 0.66, 3.04 and 1.4, saponification numbers 126, 128 and 137, and hydroxyl numbers 4, 2 and 4 respectively; (2) acetylated polyoxyethylene sorbitol ester of stearic acid with acid number 1.6, saponification number 130 and hydroxyl number 2; (3) acetylated polyoxyethylene sorbitol esters from refined tall oil acids with acid numbers 23.8 and 14, saponification numbers 118 and 132 and hydroxyl numbers 4 and 5 respectively. The sludge can be, for example, chosen from a primary pulp and paper sludge, a secondary pulp and paper sludge, a de-inking sludge, and mixtures thereof. It was found that by incorporating such a sludge in fiberboards and thus partially replacing wood fibers by sludge, it is possible to produce a fiberboard, at lower costs, which demonstrated characteristics and properties similar to a standard fiberboard. Processes and compositions used for preparing such fiberboards are also disclosed.

A sizing composition and a method of sizing a cellulosic fiber material are disclosed. The sizing composition comprises an aqueous dispersion of a rosin material and a polyaluminium compound, and is characterised in that the polyaluminium compound is a polyaluminium phosphate sulphate compound. The polyaluminium phosphate sulphate compound should comprise at least 5 % by weight, calculated as aluminium on the amount of rosin material in the composition. It is preferred that the sizing composition also comprises a synthetic sizing agent in addition to the rosin material. The dispersion preferably also includes a dispersing agent and has a dry content of at least 1 % by weight. The sizing composition is used for the sizing of cellulosic fibre materials, such as paper, board or paper board by adding 0.01-5 % by weight, calculated as dry sizing agent on dry cellulose fibers, of the sizing composition to the cellulosic fibre material, preferably to a cellulose stock for internal sizing of the cellulosic fibre material.

A method of applying a powder coating to a length of lignocellulosic material such as for example a sheet of paper includes the steps of: (a) impregnating the length of lignocellulosic material with an impregnating composition comprising either: (i) a dicarboxylic anhydride or a tricarboxylic anhydride dissolved in a suitable non-aqueous solvent; or (ii) an isocyanate thermosetting resin dissolved in a suitable non-aqueous solvent; or (ii) a combination of a dicarboxylic anhydride or a tricarboxylic anhydride and an isocyanate thermosetting resin dissolved in a suitable non-aqueous solvent; (b) if necessary removing from the impregnated length of lignocellulosic material any excess of the impregnating composition; (c) removing the non-aqueous solvent or solvents; (d) placing the impregnated length of lignocellulosic material in an electrostatic field or in a fluidized bed and applying a powder coating composition thereto so that the powder coating composition adheres thereto; and (e) then subjecting the length of lignocellulosic material to elevated temperatures to polymerise and/or cross-link the resin or resins in the length of lignocellulosic material and to cure the powder coating composition to form the powder coating.
