An apparatus for measuring ignition charge signals produced by coils of coil- on-plug devices of an internal combustion engine. A signal detector comprises an insulating substrate having a first conductive planar layer on a first side and a second conductive planar layer on a second side. The first layer is coupled to a signal wire and the second layer is coupled to a ground wire. When the signal detector is held in close proximity to the coil of the coil-on-plug, ignition signals generated by the coil and passing to the plug are detected. The detected signals may be coupled to a signal analyzer for display and analysis. The amplitude of the signal that is output by the signal detector may be adjusted to different coils having different output signal strengths by modifying the ratio of the surface areas of the first layer and the second layer.

A standby generator includes an alternator to produce electricity for distribution to an electrical system, and an air-cooled internal combustion engine driving the alternator. The air-cooled internal combustion engine includes one or more cylinders, one or more spark plugs each configured to initiate combustion in a corresponding cylinder, and one or more ignition coils each coupled to a respective spark plug of the one or more spark plugs to provide a voltage to the respective spark plug. The standby generator also includes a battery system electrically coupled to the one or more ignition coils to provide power thereto, and a digital ignition module wiring the battery system to each of the one or more ignition coils to control operation of the one or more spark plugs.

An engine ignition and control system for an internal combustion engine. The system includes an ignition transformer mounted directly to a spark plug and adapted to rapidly re-fire the spark plug during a combustion cycle enabling the performance of various ignition diagnostic procedures. A controller provides signals to a circuit which causes charging of the transformer for ignition and subsequent charging of the transformer for diagnostic purposes. The system also includes a diagnostic circuit, connected to the transformer, which can detect the occurrence of electrical discharges across the spark plug electrodes as a result of the diagnostic charges. The detection circuit either outputs a signal ar omits a signal to the controller which allows the controller to diagnose conditions within the combustion cylinder. Additionally, the diagnostic circuit is capable of outputting a signal which can be correlated to the load on the engine.

An ignition coil for an internal combustion engine is provided which includes a body with a metallic hollow cylinder and a high-voltage portion joined to an end of the cylinder. The hollow cylinder has a primary winding and a secondary winding disposed therein. The high-voltage portion is made of a resin material and includes an inner cylinder and an outer cylinder disposed outside the inner cylinder through a gap. The inner cylinder has disposed therein a conductive elastic member which establishes an electric connection to a spark plug. A resinous insulator is disposed in a gap between the first and second cylinders. The resinous insulator is higher in insulation strength than the resin material of the high-voltage portion, thereby improving the degree of electric insulation between the metallic hollow cylinder and the conductive elastic member.

An ignition coil for an, internal combustion engine includes an annular elastic seal which is tightly attached to a high-voltage tower and a plug installed in the high-voltage tower to be conductible with a spark plug. The elastic seal hermetically seals a gap between the high-voltage tower and the plug and also functions as a buffer to absorb stress, as exerted from the plug on a case of the ignition coil. This enables the case to be reduced in size as a whole without having to partially increase the wall thickness of the case to ensure a required degree of stiffness of the case and also results in improved degree of hermetic sealing between the plug and the high-voltage tower.

An ignition coil has a core with a longitudinal axis, a secondary winding extending around the core, a sleeve extending around the core, a primary winding wrapped around the sleeve, and a controller connected to the primary winding so as to oscillate alternating current to said primary winding. The secondary winding has a high-voltage end and a low-voltage end. The primary winding is in spaced longitudinal relationship from the secondary winding. Specifically, the primary winding is located longitudinally away from the high-voltage end of the secondary winding. A bobbin is positioned over and around the core. The secondary winding is wrapped around at least a portion of the bobbin. 1. An ignition coil comprising:a core;a secondary winding extending around said core, said secondary winding having a high-voltage end and a low-voltage end;a sleeve extending over said core;a primary winding wrapped around said sleeve, said primary winding in spaced longitudinal relationship from said low-voltage end of said secondary winding, said primary winding located longitudinally away from said high-voltage end of said secondary winding; anda controller connected to said primary winding so as to oscillate alternating current to said primary winding.2. In an ignition coil for an internal combustion engine, a spark plug is incorporated which has an insulator including an insulator head that has no corrugation. The ignition coil has a coil body part generating high voltage and a joint part, which holds therein a conducting member electrically connecting the coil body part and a spark plug. The joint part has a plug cap into which the insulator head of the spark plug is inserted and which is formed of an elastic member having a cylindrical shape. The plug cap has a close-contact part whose inner peripheral surface is closely brought into contact with an outer peripheral surface of the insulator. The close-contact part has a tip end-side close-contact part positioned at a tip end side with respect to a middle position in an axial direction, and a base end-side close-contact part positioned at a base end side with respect to the middle position. A system and method for enhancing spark generation in an ignition coil of an internal combustion engine at low rotational speeds of the flywheel. The method and system monitor the rotational speed of the flywheel and, when the rotational speed of the flywheel is below a threshold rotational speed, the system and method supplies voltage pulses to the primary winding. The timing of the voltage pulses supplied to the primary winding are triggered off of voltage transitions in pulses induced in the primary winding upon rotation of the flywheel.
