A controller assembly controls water flow through individual emitters of a heating/cooling system based on a temperature setpoint and room temperature indicator obtained from an associated thermostat. The controller assembly provides delta temperature room control using a high precision movement actuator fitted with two pipe temperature sensors to power modulate individual radiators, underfloor heating circuits or fan-coils to provide energy efficiency for individual room heating/cooling control. Based on the temperature difference between the room temperature and the setpoint the controller assembly controls water flow through the emitter by adjusting a valve to attain a target temperature delta between the inlet and outlet of the emitter. As the room temperature approaches the setpoint so that the temperature difference decreases, the power output of the emitter is modulated to achieve desirable performance characteristics.

Heating buildings.-To heat the water in a lowpressure hot-water heating-system to a temperature higher than 100‹ C. without the formation of steam, the water in the system is subjected to an additional external pressure of such an amount that the pressure at the highest water-level in the system is greater than the steam pressure corresponding to the highest temperature arising in the system. The Figure shows the usual boiler a, flow and return pipes b, c respectively, and radiators d. Between a water-supply cock f and the boiler a, is provided a pressure cylinder h, which also acts as an expansion vessel. The cylinder h is provided with a loaded piston i, k, to give the necessary increase of pressure to the water in the system. Instead of the cylinder and piston, the additional pressure may be provided for by means of a pump or column of water connected to any suitable place in the system, or the system may be connected to a hydraulic main. By throwing out of action the apparatus for producing the additional pressure, the system may be used as an ordinary open lowpressure hot-water circulating-system.

The equipment is for use with an expansion vessel in a heating, refrigeration or air-conditioning system. A probe extends downwards into the vessel and parallel to one of the sidewalls, so as to form with the wall a capacitor whose capacity varies with the liquid level and which is part of an electronic monitoring circuit. In addition to the high and low level alarm levels the probe (12) detects an intermediate level at which a relay cuts in a pump maintaining the level in the event of slight leakage. All these operating levels can be adjusted by components of the electronic circuit.

The expansion vessel (1) of a heating or cooling installation, divided by means of a flexible diaphragm (2) into two separate chambers (1a,1b) for a working fluid and a pressure fluid, is supported on a frame structure (B1) in which a compressor unit (3,6,7) is fitted. This serves for the preparation of a pressure fluid supply within a pressure fluid container (3), which is fed by a manostat-controlled (6) compressor (7) and is kept under a given operating pressure. The maintenance of a given pressure in the working fluid of the expansion vessel (1) is carried out by a differential pressure control of the pressure fluid, the associated chamber (1b) for which in the expansion vessel (1) is connected to the pressure fluid container (3) through a pressure fluid feed and drain duct (12) via an inlet or feed valve (8). A branch duct (12') connected to this pressure fluid duct (12) contains an outlet valve (9). Both valves (8,9) are controlled by a differential pressure manostat (5) which senses the pressure in the pressure fluid chamber (1b) via a separate measurement duct (11) and brings about the supply of pressure fluid into, or the discharge of pressure fluid from, the pressure fluid chamber (1b) when the values fall below, or exceed, a pressure fluctuation bandwidth.

A pressure management device (10) for use with a heating system is disclosed which obviates the need for manual topping up of the heating system, protects against flooding and avoids danger of backflow of heating system fluid and consequent contamination of a mains water supply. The pressure management device has an inlet (12) for connection to a mains water supply; an outlet (14) for connection to a heating system; and a fluid flow path between the inlet and the outlet. A one-way valve (16) is disposed in the fluid flow path and arranged to permit flow in the direction from the inlet toward the outlet and to resist flow in the opposite direction. A pressure reducing valve (18) is also disposed in the fluid flow path and is configured to respond to an outlet pressure of the pressure management device, being normally maintained in a closed state by the outlet pressure but adapted to open when the outlet pressure falls below a threshold. In this way the pressure reducing valve causes the heating system to be topped up when necessary. Additionally a flood prevention device (20) is disposed in the fluid flow path and is configured to close in response to excessive flow through the pressure management device, so that any risk that the pressure reducing valve might permit uncontrolled release of water in the event of a leakage in the heating system is obviated.

A fill valve for a water heating system. An expansion tank is provided with a flexible diaphragm which divides the tank into a water chamber and a closed gas chamber. A fill valve assembly is mounted within an opening in the tank and includes a valve body having an axial passage and a radial passage connects the axial passage to a water inlet. One end of the axial passage communicates with the water chamber of the expansion tank, while the opposite end of the axial passage communicates with the water heating system. The central portion of the axial passage defines a valve seat and a hollow valve member is mounted for sliding movement in the axial passage, and the inner end of the valve member extends into the tank in position to be contacted by the diaphragm. Mounted on the valve member is an annular valve which is biased to engage the valve seat. A plurality of ports extends laterally of the valve member and provides communication between the inlet and the interior of the valve member. When the liquid in the water heating system expands, the diaphragm will be flexed inwardly causing the valve to be biased to a closed position to prevent water from entering through the inlet. When the volume of water in the heating system contracts, the diaphragm will flex outwardly moving the valve member within the valve body to open the valve and permit water to flow from the inlet to the heating system.

A heating system (10) has an expansion tank (11) which provides water to a low pressure boiler (12) for heating. Heated water is distributed around a fluid conduit (13, 16) to one or more radiators (14) then returned to the boiler. A pump (17) is connected to the outlet conduit to assist fluid flow through the system when the system is active to provide heating. Pressure control means (18, 19, 21, 21A, 26) maintains the fluid in the distribution conduit at a positive pressure during periods when the system is quiescent and includes a non-return valve means (18) in the outlet conduit (13) and a further valve means (19; 26) to prevent fluid flowing through the return conduit (16) to the expansion tank when the system is quiescent and/or when the pressure of the fluid in the distribution conduit falls below a first predetermined threshold. A pressure responsive means (21; 21A) activates the pump (17) if the pressure in the distribution conduit falls below the first or a second predetermined threshold. The arrangement ensures that the system will operate even if one or more of the radiators (14) are disposed above the level of the fluid in the tank (11) without the need to pressurise the system and may be adapted for use with air conditioning or cooling systems.

Es sind ein Überströmventil (2) und eine Pumpe (4) vorgesehen. Bei Überdruck in der Anlage öffnet sich das Überström­ ventil (2) und läßt Wasser in den Ausgleichsbehälter (14). Kommt es zu Unterdruck in der Anlage, schaltet ein Druck­ schalter (3) die Pumpe (4) ein, die Wasser aus dem Aus­ gleichsbehälter in die Anlage pumpt. Gleichzeitig wird in der Elektronik-Steuereinrichtung (5) ein Zeitimpuls ausgelöst und bewirkt, daß die Pumpe (4) nicht mehr druckabhängig, sondern zeitabhängig abgeschaltet wird. At negative pressure, water comes out of the compensation container into the system via lines (15, 17, 18). There are an overflow valve (2) and a pump (4) are provided. If there is overpressure in the system, the overflow opens valve (2) and lets water into the expansion tank (14). If there is negative pressure in the system, a pressure switches switch (3) on the pump (4), the water from the off pumps the surge tank into the system. At the same time in the electronics control device (5) a time pulse triggered and causes the pump (4) no longer depending on pressure, but is switched off depending on time.

Dies wird dadurch erreicht, daß das Ausdehnungsgefäß aus einem in einem Formgebungsprozeß hergestellten Kunststoffkörper (1) mit wenigstens zwei zylinderförmigen Hohlräumen (2,3) besteht, von denen wenigstens einer im wesentlichen den Wasserraum und wenigstens der andere im wesentlichen den Gasraum bildet, wobei Verbindungsleitungen (4,5) für den Druckausgleich zwischen den Hohlräumen (2,3) in den Kunststoffkörper (1) integriert sind. <IMAGE> An expansion vessel for heating or the like., In particular wall heaters, with a water and gas space separated from one another by a separating element, the water space being connected to a water supply network and the gas space being filled with a pressurized gas, should be improved so that it due to its geometry, it offers improved pressure stability and thus enables the use of alternative materials, such as plastic, for the production of such vessels. The hydro-pneumatic pressure vessel is in the form of a water/air expansion tank communicating with the pipe circuit by means of a conduit and a float valve is provided in the conduit. The expansion tank includes air under pressure and the water. A barrier liquid is provided as a barrier layer between the water and the air, the barrier liquid being made of a clear polyalphaolefin fluid which is impermeable to water and does not readily absorb oxygen. The float valve has a float member having a specific gravity less than the specific gravity of water but greater than the specific gravity of the barrier liquid such that when the barrier liquid is being drained from the expansion tank, the float member in the valve will sink onto the valve seat when the barrier liquid is in the valve chamber thus closing the valve.

[Also in Group XIII] Nitrogen from a cylinder 13 passes into a steam and water drum 5 of a steam pressurized hot water system when a valve 20 is opened by a solenoid controlled by a diaphragm device 11 responding to a drop in drum pressure. The system may be used for heating by circulating the hot water or for providing a draw-off supply. When the drum pressure is sufficient, the valve 20 may be closed by the device 11 or by a similar device 12. On shut-down of the system, the admission of nitrogen may be through the valve 20 or through a hand-operated valve 19. The drum 5 and its supply boilers or boiler 1 have safety valves 2, 9 and the drum has a float-operated high-level alarm 8 and a take-off pipe 10. The automatic admission of nitrogen occurs when the pressure drops in operation or on shut-down, but there may be an arrangement for the admission at one only of these events. In Fig. 1 (not shown), there is indicated an open tank connected to a pump for feeding to the bottom of the drum 5. In Fig. 2 there is shown an expansion vessel 22 which is provided when the drum 5 is unable to take up all the expansion and which is given a light charge of nitrogen through a hand valve 24 and has a hand makeup valve 26. In the drum 5, a float 29 near the bottom controls a feed pump 23 through which the vessel 22 is connected to the boiler 1. Other connections between the vessel and boiler are through a hand valve 32 and a solenoid-operated spill valve 33 controlled by a float 34 in the drum 5.
