An apparatus and method for continuously monitoring the weight of an object are disclosed. The apparatus does not obstruct a central portion of the bottom of the object being monitored, and is especially well-suited for monitoring the weight of a beehive. In the illustrative embodiment, a ring-shaped fluid-filled bladder is sandwiched between a ring-shaped top surface and a ring-shaped base, and a pressure hose connects the bladder to a pressure gauge. Beehive weight data can be obtained in a continuous fashion, without requiring any moving of the beehive or of the apparatus, and without any other type of disruption. Moreover, the apparatus provides a stable platform that keeps the beehive immobile during monitoring, which is beneficial for the health of the colony. Advantageously, the apparatus can be constructed from inexpensive, off-the-shelf components and materials, and is capable of obtaining accurate measurements over a wide range of temperatures and environmental conditions.

A capacitive occupant detection system ( 10 ) comprises a sine signal generator ( 12 ) to apply a sine voltage signal to an antenna electrode ( 14 ) and a current measurement circuit ( 18, 20, 28, 30, 40 ) to measure current signals, based upon which a control and evaluation unit determines and outputs an occupancy state. The signal generator ( 12 ) is coupled to the antenna electrode via an amplitude adjustment stage ( 13 ), configured to adjust the amplitude of said sine voltage signal applied to said antenna electrode to an amplitude selected among at least two discrete amplitudes. The control and evaluation circuit selects one of the discrete amplitudes at a time and causes the amplitude adjustment stage to adjust the amplitude of said the voltage signal applied to the antenna electrode accordingly. The control and evaluation circuit carries out an interference detection mode and an occupant detection mode. In interference detection mode, the current signals are measured while a low one of the at least two discrete amplitudes is selected and it is determined whether the antenna electrode is exposed to interference. In occupant detection mode, the current signals are measured while a high one of the at least two discrete amplitudes is selected and occupancy state is determined based upon the current signals thus measured.

An occupant detection system and method that uses an isolation assembly to isolate electrically a power supply providing power to a heater element for heating a vehicle seat from a sensing circuit that uses the heater element as an electrode for electric field or capacitance type occupant detection. Method and apparatus are disclosed for determining vehicle seat occupancy. An example vehicle includes a vehicle seat, an accelerometer coupled to the vehicle seat, and a restraint control module. The restraint control module is configured to determine a minute of arc measurement for the vehicle seat based on data received from the accelerometer, determine that the vehicle seat is occupied based on the minute of arc measurement, and provide an alert. 1.
