Computing equipment may display data items in a list on a touch screen display. The computing equipment may use the touch screen display to detect touch gestures. A user may select a data item using a touch gesture such as a tap gesture. In response, the computing equipment may display a selectable option. When the option is displayed, movable markers may be placed in the list. The markers can be dragged to new locations to adjust how many of the data items are selected and highlighted in the list. Ranges of selected items may be merged by moving the markers to unify separate groups of selected items. A region that contains multiple selectable options may be displayed adjacent to a selected item. The selectable options may correspond to different ways to select and deselect items. Multifinger swipe gestures may be used to select and deselect data items.

An approach for processing scanned document data includes a document processing service processing scanned document data and generating text data that represents text contained in one or more printed documents. The document processing service identifies, in the text data, contact data for a recipient and uses the contact data to automatically transmit the scanned document data and/or the text data to the recipient. The contact information may be included with the text data and a confirmation may also be generated and transmitted. The document processing device may also store the text data and later retrieve and transmit the text data to a specified recipient in response to a request. The document processing service may also transmit the contact data to the scanning device so that the scanning device may make the contact data available to a user for subsequent scan jobs, for example, in an address book or contact list.

More specifically, the user is provided with a lock menu screen via an application, which displays a menu of a plurality of applications that can be run on his/her phone when the user unlocks/wakes up the phone. Since the user typically uses only a limited number of applications most of the time, the lock menu application allows the user to specify these applications and then provides them quick access to these applications. This not only provides the user with a deterministic experience by allowing them quick access to their most important applications when the phone wakes up, but also allows the user to return to the application that was running prior to the phone going to sleep if the user desires.

Embodiments enable a mobile device to execute an action analogous to a user-defined action in response to receipt of a gesture analogous to a user-defined gesture. In a first embodiment, a computer-implemented method executes an action on a mobile device. A lock screen view is displayed on the mobile device to prevent unauthorized and inadvertent access to the mobile device's data. While the mobile device is locked, a touch gesture having a pre-defined shape is detected on a touch screen of the mobile device independently of the initial position of the touch gesture on the touch screen. In response to detection of the touch gesture, a particular action is executed on the mobile device while the mobile device stays locked. The particular action determined according to the pre-defined shape. In this way, detection of the touch gesture causes the particular action to execute while keeping the mobile device locked.
