An upper ultra-violet (UV) lamp is located above the gap and a lower UV light is arranged below the gap. An electrical system causes the upper UV lamp and the lower UV lamp to direct UV light onto an upper surface and a lower surface of the currency bills they are conveyed into the sanitizing chamber and travel across the gap, the UV light being selected to have an intensity to sanitize the currency bills as they pass through the sanitizing apparatus.
