The stack forming passage has vertical rollers, and a movable coin stack support at the bottom of this passage. The passage is formed by two rotating rollers, which are driven in the same direction and have their parallel axes in a common plane. A coin stacking apparatus includes a conveyor for conveying coins edge-wise one at a time and delivering each of the conveyed coins in its horizontal position. A receiver receives the coins from the outlet end of the conveyor in a stacked condition. The receiver includes two endless belts running along the length of the receiver and cooperating with each other to form a coin receiving space therebetween. Each of the endless belts has a supporter extending therefrom. The supporter includes a surface on which the coins are to be placed. The surface is inclined upwardly and forwardly relative to the direction of the conveyor.

A coin counter has longitudinal recesses, 7a, 7b, 7c, to receive coins depending on their kind, a center line 20 drawn on the bottom of each recess, and horizontal graduations B, B<1> extending alternately on the left and right sides of the center line 20 at vertical intervals each corresponding to the thickness of a coin. Just above each graduation, a numeral that indicates the total value of coins to be stacked up to the graduation in question is written. A numeral appearing just above the top coin indicates the total amount of the stacked coins. In an alternative embodiment the graduations are formed in three columns. The graduations and numerals may alternatively be formed on the outside of a transparent cylinder containing the coins.

A coin holder is provided which has a base portion and at least one elongate trough defined in the base portion. Each trough is sized and shaped to receive a stack of a particular denomination of coins. A plurality of regularly-spaced grooves is formed in the bottom surface of at least one trough. The gooves are oriented transversely to the trough. Each one of the grooves is adapted to receive one of the coins in the stack. The grooves are spaced apart so that every nth coin in the stack is received in one of the grooves. The gooves are shaped so that every nth coin in the stack is laterally displaced from adjacent coins in a generally vertical direction to provide a discernible pattern in the stack of coins.

The value of the contents of the cylinder is ascertained from the graduation mark at the level of the uppermost coin. A number of such containers for coins of different sizes and values may be arranged in a convenient order on a board (10A), with a central container for coins of the lowest denomination. ADVANTAGE - Counting time is reduced by a simple, practical and inexpensive arrangement.
