The rectangular configuration shown leads to high field uniformity and avoids hot spots but other configurations are possible. The super-conductors are of ten mils diameter and the size of the aluminium coating is 0À1 x 0À6 inch. The cable is produced by drawing super-conductors from spools, through an acid cleaning bath and a heated extrusion head the super-conductors being in tension in order to maintain their spacing.

A superconductor of the general formula A3B, e.g. Nb3Sn, is manufactured by mechanical fabrication of A filaments in a bronze containing B followed by heat treatment to form A3B by solid state reaction from B diffusing through the bronze without melting of the bronze. A pure metal for stabilisation is mechanically fabricated together with the other components and protected from diffusion thereinto of any of the other components by a barrier layer of A metal. Superconductor formation on the harrier layer of A metal during the heat treatment is avoided or reduced by surface treatment or surface coating which inhibits A3 reaction between A and B at the barrier.

The composite wires are embedded in the strips by hot-rolling at 300-600 degrees C. A cryogenic fluid circulation channel is formed in the finished product by joining various assembly components, before or after rolling to create an inner free space between them.

A process for producing a compound-based semiconductor wire having a high mechanical strength and which can be coiled so as to be cooled efficiently. A starting composition is formed by blending at least one metal powder selected from among Nb-based and V-based particles having at least a partial surface coating of an alloy or metal selected from Cu-Sn-based and Ga-based metal layers with at least one of Cu-based, Sn-based, Ga-based, Cu-Sn-based and Cu-Ga-based metal or alloy powder. The cross-sectional area of the composition is reduced followed by a heat treatment. The composition is then drawn into a wire of desired diameter.

A superconductor of the general formula A3 B, e.g. Nb3 Sn, is manufactured by mechanical fabrication of A filaments in a bronze containing B followed by heat treatment to form A3 B by solid state reaction from B diffusing through the bronze without melting of the bronze. A pure metal for stabilization is mechanically fabricated together with the other components and protected from diffusion thereinto of any of the other components by a barrier layer of A metal. Superconductor formation on the barrier layer of A metal during the heat treatment is avoided or reduced by surface treatment or surface coating which inhibits A3 reaction between A and B at the barrier.
