A superconducting cable
1101617 Super-conductors UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION 8 Oct 1965 [29 Oct 1964] 42897/65 Headings H1A A5 and A4D A cable is made from hard super-conductors 10 such as niobium-tin, niobium-zirconium and niobium-titanium, encased in a coating having normal electrical and mechanical conductivity at the temperature of liquid helium, in the example given, aluminium. The rectangular configuration shown leads to high field uniformity and avoids hot spots but other configurations are possible. The super-conductors are of ten mils diameter and the size of the aluminium coating is 0À1 x 0À6 inch. The cable is produced by drawing super-conductors from spools, through an acid cleaning bath and a heated extrusion head the super-conductors being in tension in order to maintain their spacing.
