[Also in Divisions G4, H1 and H3-H5] A pulse generator consists of a load impedance Z L , Pig. 1, a centre-tapped variable supply voltage E, and two impedance elements ZA, Z B , each having a characteristic (Fig. 2, not shown), which exhibits an abrupt change in current flow through the element at a predetermined threshold voltage applied across it, the threshold voltages for the two elements ZA, ZB being different. In operation, as the voltage supply is increased one of the elements ZA switches to its high current condition, causing a current to flow in the load Z L . The consequent voltage across the load Z L increases the voltage across Z B so that this element also switches to its high current state, and as the common connection of ZA, Z B is now approximately back at the potential of the centre tap of E, the load current in Z L stops.
