Digital audio signals processed by a first signal processing circuit are stored into a memory and transmitted to a second signal processing circuit via a cascade-connection. The second signal processing circuit adds the audio signal, processed for each of the steps, to audio signals input via the cascade-connection and writes added signal into the memory.

In an optical network system a carrier light propagates along a transmission line. A control light generator included in an optical multiplexing apparatus generates a control light obtained by modulating an intensity-modulated light by a data signal. A multiplexer combines the control light with the carrier light for modulating the carrier light in a nonlinear optical medium in the transmission line by the control light. The carrier light which propagates along the transmission line is modulated in the nonlinear optical medium on the basis of the control light.

In a DOCSIS transmission network, it is necessary for an upstream receiver to estimate and correct for errors in the carrier frequency of the transmission based upon observations of a preamble sequence. This task is complicated by the fact that microreflections in the upstream channels cause intersymbol interference, which tends to bias the frequency estimation circuit. An economical, ISI-immune algorithm is provided for estimating the carrier frequency of upstream transmissions. The arrangement improves the reliability of the frequency estimates in the presence of ISI, thereby reducing the overhead and increasing the throughput of the upstream channels.

Signal selecting is performed at the received radio frequency (RF) and bandstacking is performed with a single downconversion step to an intermediate frequency (IF). Channel stacking on the same cable of more than two channels from several satellites can be achieved by using frequency agile downconverters and bandpass filters prior to combining at the IF output. A slow transitioning switch minimizes signal disturbances when switching and maintains input impedance at a constant value.

System and method to extend the data carrying capacity of a hybrid fiber cable (HFC) network by adding wideband RF signal capability above 1 GHz, and replacing at least some CATV active devices such as amplifiers with a new type of Coax Domain Node (CDN) device that acts to segment the CATV cable portion of the HFC network into a series of smaller domains. The CDN generally filter RF signals from 5-865 MHz, while amplifying and passing RF signals over 1 GHz. Upstream capability is enhanced because the CDN intercept 5-42 MHz upstream signals from each domain and convert to 1 GHz+ signals. Downstream capability is also enhanced because the CDN can take efficiently encoded 1 GHz+ digital data, QAM modulate it, and locally inject into each domain without crosstalk between domains. The system pushes data management and downstream from the head end to the CDN, creating more throughput.

Provided is a transmitting apparatus, a receiving apparatus, and the like that can switch a content even if the reception conditions of a plurality of streams are deteriorated at the same time, and that have reduced power consumption and an increased packet loss tolerance. The receiving apparatus includes: a first reception section for receiving a first stream by predetermined unit and extracting first content data; a control section for determining whether or not the first stream has been normally received, with respect to each predetermined unit, and for, if the first stream has not been normally received, issuing an instruction to start reception of a second stream to be transmitted later than the first stream; a second reception section for, when the second reception section has received the instruction, starting reception of the second stream, receiving the second stream corresponding to the predetermined unit of the first stream that has not been received, and extracting second content data; and a reproduction control section for, if the first stream has not been received, reproducing a content for alternative display based on the second content data, and for, if the first stream has been received, reproducing a content for normal display based on the first content data at the same timing as a timing to reproduce the content for alternative display.

A super-frame spanning a time period is received within the subnetwork. The super-frame includes beacon frames in beacon slots within a beacon period, with each beacon frame in one of N TMs, a contention access period (CAP) including a plurality of CAP slots provided for each TM, and a poll-based contention-free period (CFP). The beacon frames provide time assignments within the super-frame including time assignments for the CAP slots and for the CFP, and TM assignments for the TMs in the CAP slots. One of nodes, another router in the subnetwork, or a router in another subnetwork transmits a broadcast frame on the PLC channel. The first router forwards the broadcast frame on the PLC channel in each of the N TMs within the time period.

A system and method is presented where a low-IF architecture can be used to allow existing wireless standards to be used for joint wireless/power-line channel transmission in the provision of diversity communications channels. Diversity combining of wireless and power-line channels can be employed, wherein the input noise to the maximum-likelihood detector can be Class A-distributed. For uncoded BPSK, the BER can be a function of PLC impulsiveness and can improve wireless-only BER by orders of magnitude when PLC SNR >10 dB. The error performance can be equivalent to BER of the static PLC channel for low wireless SNR and can improve with a slope of −1 at high wireless SNRs. The inflection point between these two regions can occur at approximately 0 dB when PLC noise is Gaussian, and increases above 20 dB as the noise becomes more impulsive.

Watermark symbol detection requires a detection metric for deciding at decoder side which candidate symbol is embedded inside the audio or video signal content.
