To improve Wake-on-LAN (WOL) functionality of a device, a Media Access Control (MAC) address filtering function may be implemented in the device's Ethernet physical layer (ePHY) block. When the ePHY detects a WOL frame, the MAC filtering function in the ePHY may perform address comparison between the MAC address associated with the device, and the MAC address contained in the WOL frame. Performing the MAC address comparison within the ePHY allows the main system components, such as the main SOC and other components to remain in standby mode (or sleep mode) until a MAC address match has been determined. Therefore, the main system components do not need to be rebooted every time the device receives a WOL frame, only when there is a match between the MAC address of the system and the MAC address contained in the detected WOL packet.

A method for controlling downstream scheduling in an Ethernet passive optical network EPON , said method comprising the steps of:i) setting downstream traffic scheduling rules at an optical line terminal OLT;ii) letting said rules be known by optical network units ONUs, an ONU owning information of the downstream traffic scheduling rules enabling said ONU capable of inferring its current downstream queue status based on historical arrival downstream traffic;iii) according to the inferred queue status, said ONUs making their own sleep decisions based on selective sleep control rules, said sleep control rules being implemented at said ONU side being known by said OLT; andiv) based on said sleep control rules, said OLT inferring a status of said ONUs, and buffering incoming downstream traffic of sleep ONUs responsively.2. An energy efficient sleep signature in power over Ethernet. In one embodiment, a signature of a powered device is first detected. It is then determined whether the detected signature is indicative of an unknown powered device. In one example, a detected signature of an approximately 25 kΩ impedance is indicative of an unknown powered device. Where the detected signature is indicative of an unknown powered device a normal PoE startup powering process can be used that includes a conventional detection, classification and powering process. Where the detected signature is indicative of a powered device that was previously known to the PSE, then powering of the PD can proceed with a fast-restart powering method that retains previous powering parameters.

The present invention provides a way of placing a physical layer device into a standby mode. After a link is established between multiple devices, a determination is made whether the device has data to transmit or whether a standby request was received from a link partner. If a standby request was received or the device has no data to transmit, standby mode is entered. In standby mode, unneeded circuitry is powered down. A transmitter in a channel and a receive path in a separate channel remain powered. While operating in standby mode, the PHY layer continuously transmits a standby code on the one or more channels that are not powered down. The present invention relates to Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) systems. The invention proposes to use a classification event to communicate from the PD ( 121 ) to the PSE ( 110, 910 ). A sensor ( 310, 410, 510 a, 510 b ) may determine a sensor value, shut down the PoE connection, and reconnect so that the power up cycle with the PSE ( 110, 910 ) will start. The sensor ( 310, 410, 510 a, 510 b ) provides a PoE resistance related to a class 0, 3 where the class relates to the sensor value (e.g., class 0=presence detected; class 1=no presence detected). This procedure may be repeated (e.g. continuously, every minute or whenever the sensor value changes such that the PSE ( 110, 910 ) needs to be informed) and if needed multiple cycles can be used to increase the length of the message communicated.
